“Just Say NO”

Download “Just Say NO” mp3 to listen as you follow the lyrics below:

“Just Say NO”

by the "Just Say NO Posse" of "Stop The War Brigade"

(i)read the newspaper just the other day
heavy storm clouds are moving are way.
(they) wanna to send me to the desert,
to play a deadly game
armed to the teeth homeboy,
ready to murder and maim.

got no say in this matter
did you ask how i feel?
chumps like me a-dime-dozen,
think we don't know the deal?
i ain't dying for the price of gas
yo, uncle sam, you can kiss my ass!!!

so when they tell you to go
just say no
to the flow
because we' about to G.O.
and you know
we're gonna break these chains of the mind
and i find
it's a race for mankind
the people, the populace blind to the fact
that the cards are stacked
in his favor
well tell me suckers, do you taste the flavor?
hard beats and rhymes is what he gave ya.

don't wanna be hero,
can't stand john wayne
to go and die for you,
i'd have to be insane.
there's no glory in disaster,
once the wheels of war start to turn.
tell me, what's the next step sucker,
when the oil-fields start to burn?

new york, paris, london, rome.
young men and women
dragged away from their homes
sydney, berlin, Baghdad, tel aviv.
facing of at each other
for the sultans of greed.

brothers will be dying - mothers will be crying
and what's it all for, just another rich man's war!!!

some people seem to think
it'll all be over quick.
but what about vietnam, LBJ, and tricky dick?
george bush high-riding on a wooden horse,
charging in guns blazing,
and condemning deadly force.

they like to have us believe
they're defending democracy.
but anyone with eyes can see, that's a fallacy!
saudi arabia's not a democratic state,
the women on the street,
can't even show their face.

i'm tired of you waving
that flag in my face.
i ain't gonna fight
for your fat-rat-race.
i'm not a sucker, politician
or a money hungry pig.
so, wake up, dig!!!

talking about drugs and crime in the street
poor walkin' wounded picking through garbage,
trick or treat!!
hey boy, ya wanna a job then
just drop your nuts in the sand.
while i blow smoke up you ass,
drive you crazy, make you kill for the man.

you're a jive mother-fucker and a hypocrite
you'd have to blind not
to see through this shit,
this is President Bush's role show
he wants you to play a role.
meanwhile he's out fucking 'round
on the 14th hole

don't believe cnn's pig media shit.
i'm telling you brother,
we've got to resist!!
the army don't care about heroes in saudi,
you gotta refuse, don't be another body.

so when they tell you to go
just say no!!!

Subject: RE: "Just Say NO"

My name is Darnell Stephen Summers. I'm sending you the text of the Rap, "Just Say NO".
This rap has been around since before the first Gulf War. It was written at my home in Worms Germany, in August 1990 shortly after Iraqi Forces invaded Kuwait.
At that time I was a member of a band that included four active-duty soldiers and several veterans.
The day of the invasion was a long day for us because we had an unusually long rehearsal and everyone was tired and a little frustrated. Everyone ended up at my house and we sat down in front of the TV to chill out and check out the News to see what was happening in the world and it was then that we learned of the invasion.
We just looked at each other and sensed that this was a very significant point in world history. These events were going to affect all of us in one way or another.
There was a consensus that we should write something and we knew that if could get something together we could get it out and, at the very least, we'd be able to distribute it to the soldiers in our immediate vicinity.
We all went to the back porch and sat down and the words just began to flow.
It's amazing when you consider that we even predicted the Oil Fields would be set ablaze during the hostilities.
Now you don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure that out but a lot of people, supposedly intelligent and informed people, were shocked to see all of the black smoke billowing over the battlefield. The consequences of that fiasco have yet to be fully determined.
Suffice it to say that a lot of Soldiers will incur life-long illness and perhaps even death as a result of the criminal & reckless behaviour of "their" government and its incompetent, lapdog military leadership.
We had no idea, in 1990 how successful Rap would be, but it was the beginning of a cultural movement within the "Stop The WAR Brigade" which is still in motion today.
More than 100 artists and musicians have participated in the project to date and we've traveled to many places(Spain, Germany, Austria, USA, Turkey etc.) to perform and we are ready to move out at a moment's notice.
The "Just Say NO Posse" was born out of the circumstances surrounding the never-ending War on Iraq and its neighbors in the region. We, "Stop The War Brigade", still concentrate most of our efforts on active-duty military personnel.
"Just Say NO" has been played at many demonstrations around the world. In fact, "Just Say NO", was the sign-on music for RADIO 100 Berlin, 1991, every day until the war ended.
It also premiered on the Pacifica Network(Washington D.C. Affiliate) the day of the US-led Coalition's invasion of Iraq during a live remote interview from my home which included interviews from high school and college students who had walked out of their classes on that fateful day, and also activists and of course veterans.
Peace activists here in Germany set up loudspeakers outside military installations and blasted them with the Rap.
It seems to be everywhere but there are still many people who do not know of its existence and its history.
I hope that this email will serve to correct that situation and encourage everyone to create more Art, Music & Literature that will serve to bolster our struggle. Going directly to the troops is the ultimate way to support them. They need to be made aware of our efforts on a daily basis.
We're definitely for the "up in your face" approach to this War.
We must continue to be innovative and 10 steps ahead of the fanatic opposition.
Ciao,
Darnell

Iraq War's Signature Wound: Brain Injury

By JORDAN ROBERTSON

Associated Press Writer

PALO ALTO, Calif. (AP) -- Lance Cpl. Sam Reyes bears scars from three horrific attacks in Iraq, but his most debilitating wound cannot be seen.

He recovered from the chest wound delivered by a machine gun-toting insurgent and the bullet wound to his back that came during an ambush. He survived the severe burns and broken ribs inflicted by a suicide bomber who struck a lightly armored 18-wheeler and killed 12 of Reyes' fellow Marines.

Lets Keep Allen Ad Going!!

You are incredible! Since we unveiled this ad on Wednesday, which targets George Allen for voting against giving our troops the right body armor, donations have poured in fast and hard. On behalf of my fellow veterans, I thank you.
Reaction has been quick and strong, as well! DailyKos said it was the most compelling ad this cycle. MyDD.com gave it an A+. PoliticsTV said it is a "very well done ad spotlighting the difference between Sen.George Allen's voting record and his rhetoric."
You helped us hold accountable those that have failed the troops. Lets do it again.
As promised, we've been keeping track of all of your votes for where the ad should run next. There have been some really interesting picks. Some people hope we keep running in Virginia, some had other places they would like to run it, and someone wrote in that the ad should be run "Against all those [expletives]!!"
I have a huge smile on my face, just knowing how enthusiastically you support the troops. Just don't ask me to take you all to dinner sometime - you've got expensive taste, and voted for some of the priciest places in America to run this ad! (And you gave us some BIG surprises too). But, we hear you, and agree with you, and we want to make this happen. We're going to need your help, though, if we're going to pull this off.
We have ads ready to go against every Senator who disgracefully voted to deny troops body armor, and if we're going to get this ad up where you'd like to see it, we are going to need to raise at least $50,000 by Tuesday.
Are you up to the challenge?

Please, send this email around to all your friends and family, and please consider making a donation. Get ready and strap yourselves in, this will be one heck of a ride!
Thank you for supporting the troops- and supporting the voice of America's 21st Century patriots.

“They Just Sent Her Over There”

Reservist felt she lacked training
She is state's oldest war casualty in 50 years
By SCOTT WILLIAMS and SARAH LARIMER
You Can E-Mail Scott Williams

Posted: Sept. 11, 2006

Waukesha - An Army reservist who has become the oldest Wisconsin war casualty in at least 50 years told family members that she worried about being too old and poorly trained for combat.

"We had no idea why she was there," said Lorraine Stevenson, a cousin of Merideth Howard of Waukesha, who was killed Friday in Afghanistan, five months after her unit arrived there.

Howard was 52 years old, making her also the oldest female military member from anywhere in the United States killed in action since U.S. military operations began in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The Army announced Monday that the Waukesha woman was killed in Kabul, Afghanistan, along with another U.S. soldier when a suicide car bomber struck a Humvee military vehicle in which they were riding.

Howard was a sergeant assigned to the Army Reserves 364th Civil Affairs Brigade, a unit working to rebuild roads, schools or other infrastructure in the war-torn country.

Susan Utley, another cousin from Howard's home state of Texas, said Howard told her that training of reservists was questionable and that she was "very worried" about being deployed to Afghanistan.

"She was trying to put the best face on it," Utley said. "But, yeah, her whole going over there was with a lot of misgivings."

The military issued a statement Monday that Howard was killed in Friday's suicide bombing along with Robert J. Paul, 43, of The Dalles, Ore., another member of her military unit.

As members of a civil affairs unit, they served with doctors, fire chiefs and other professionals who are helpful in rebuilding Afghanistan's government because of their "finely honed skills practiced daily in the civilian sector," according to a military statement.

As a civilian in Waukesha, Howard worked as a fire safety consultant.

Wisconsin has lost at least six service men and women in Afghanistan, along with 61 others who have been killed in Iraq.

At the Wisconsin Veterans Museum in Madison, records show that no soldier age 52 or older from Wisconsin has died in combat since at least the Korean War during the 1950s. The museum's archives do not indicate the age of casualties in the Korean War or World War II.

The state lost at least one 53-year-old soldier during World War I.

Records from the U.S. Defense Department show that six older soldiers, all men, have died in Iraq and Afghanistan. The oldest was a 58-year-old from Alabama, according to Department of Defense casualty reports.

Lt. Col. Tim Donovan, spokesman for the Wisconsin National Guard, said the National Guard has 28 members over age 50 serving overseas, out of a total estimated 1,800 members on active duty.

Donovan said the state had a National Guard member in his upper 60s who was activated during the first Persian Gulf War and was the oldest U.S. soldier on active duty at the time.

"They're not youngsters, but they're in good physical shape," he said.

Howard, who was born in Corpus Christi, Texas, joined the Reserves in 1988. She had graduated from Texas A&M University before marrying and relocating to Waukesha with her husband, Hugh Hvolboll.

Hvolboll placed a sign at their residence asking for privacy and declining to speak with the media. The family later issued a statement through the military Monday, saying that she was a "loving, affectionate and outgoing" woman who played tennis in college and later became the first female firefighter in Bryan, Texas.

"She gave the shirt off her back to help each and every friend she had," the statement said.

The family statement said it was Howard's wish to be cremated with her ashes "scattered with fireworks in the waters of both San Francisco and Corpus Christi Bay."

According to the Army, Howard worked as a "medical equipment repairer" and was assigned to the 364th Brigade on April 5, 2006, and shipped out to Afghanistan a short time later.

The Army also said her civilian occupation as a fire protection specialist taught her to design construction specifications and inspect fire alarm systems, sprinkler systems and fire pumps.

John Margowski, director of veterans services for Waukesha County, said the military might be activating older soldiers because of their specialized needs in trying to build new governments in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Noting that the military also could be shorthanded after nearly five years of military operations, Margowski added: "Unless it's an all-out war, I would question putting someone who was older on the front lines."

Stevenson said her cousin expected to go to a safer area of Afghanistan.

Stevenson also said Howard was given a gun that she did not know how to use, even after trying to train herself.

"She was not adequately trained," Stevenson said. "They just sent her over there."

Forced Investigation of Suzanne Swift Case

Iraq Vets Force Congressional Investigation of Suzanne Swift Case

Members of Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW), Veterans for Peace, and Oregon constituents achieved a victory on the road to ending military sexual violence today with a pledge from Congressman Peter DeFazio's (D-Ore.) office that he will be initiating a congressional investigation into the case of Army Specialist Suzanne Swift.

And the Report:

Iraq Vets Force Congressional Investigation of Suzanne Swift Case

    t r u t h o u t | Report

    Tuesday 12 September 2006

Iraq vets' sit-in for Suzanne Swift is successful.

The group from Camp Democracy delivered a letter containing the phone numbers of Swift's chain of command and refused to leave the office until the Congressman acted appropriately on behalf of his constituent and all women in uniform. In unison with the direct action in Washington, constituents in Oregon and Rep. DeFazio's district flooded his offices with phone calls, emails and faxes in support of SPC Swift. Rep. DeFazio also scheduled a personal meeting with Sara Rich, Suzanne's mother, and members of IVAW for September 21, 2006.

Suzanne Swift is a veteran of the Iraq war who is now held in custody at Fort Lewis, Washington. Swift had completed a tour of duty in Iraq, where she was sexually harassed and assaulted at the hands of three of her commanding officers - continuing over the course of her entire deployment. Her efforts to report her treatment were met with disrespect and dismissed. Finally, Swift suffered a breakdown due to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and went absent without leave. She was apprehended in Eugene, Oregon, in June 2006, and instead of seeing her rapists investigated, Swift herself is facing court martial and prison time.

Organizers of the action released the following statement: "Congressman DeFazio has taken an important step toward ending military sexual violence despite the military's unwillingness to follow its own procedures and regulations. This a good first step toward making sure there is never again another Suzanne Swift."

Send Defazio Your Thanks, on behalf of Suzanne, and others!

And 'Help' him make this a Real Investigation in these times of Such Devision, Lack Of Congressional Investigations, Lack of Congressional Military Support let alone Oversite nor Democracy!!!!!!!

By The Way, Don't only Help Defazio, give your Much Needed Support to Iraq Veterans Against the War!!

Full Transcript:

And lastly tonight a Special Comment on why we are here. Half a lifetime ago, I worked in this now-empty space.
And for 40 days after the attacks, I worked here again, trying to make sense of what happened, and was yet to happen, as a reporter.
And all the time, I knew that the very air I breathed contained the remains of thousands of people, including four of my friends, two in the planes and — as I discovered from those "missing posters" seared still into my soul — two more in the Towers.
And I knew too, that this was the pyre for hundreds of New York policemen and firemen, of whom my family can claim half a dozen or more, as our ancestors.
I belabor this to emphasize that, for me… this was, and is, and always shall be, personal.
And anyone who claims that I and others like me are "soft", or have "forgotten" the lessons of what happened here — is at best a grasping, opportunistic, dilettante — and at worst, an idiot — whether he is a commentator, or a Vice President, or a President.
However. Of all the things those of us who were here five years ago could have forecast — of all the nightmares that unfolded before our eyes, and the others that unfolded only in our minds… none of us could have predicted… this.
Five years later this space… is still empty.
Five years later there is no Memorial to the dead.
Five years later there is no building rising to show with proud defiance that we would not have our America wrung from us, by cowards and criminals.
Five years later this country’s wound is still open.
Five years… later this country’s mass grave is still unmarked.
Five years later… this is still… just a background for a photo-op.
It is beyond shameful.

At the dedication of the Gettysburg Memorial — barely four months after the last soldier staggered from another Pennsylvania field, Mr. Lincoln said "we can not dedicate - we can not consecrate — we can not hallow — this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract."
Lincoln used those words to immortalize their sacrifice.
Today our leaders could use those same words to rationalize their reprehensible inaction. "We can nto dedicate — we can not consecrate — we can not hallow — this ground." So we won’t.
Instead they bicker and buck-pass. They thwart private efforts, and jostle to claim credit for initiatives that go nowhere. They spend the money on irrelevant wars, and elaborate self-congratulations, and buying off columnists to write how good a job they’re doing — instead of doing any job at all.
Five years later, Mr. Bush… we are still fighting the terrorists on these streets. And look carefully, sir — on these 16 empty acres, the terrorists… are clearly, still winning.
And, in a crime against every victim here and every patriotic sentiment you mouthed but did not enact, you have done nothing about it.

And there is something worse still than this vast gaping hole in this city, and in the fabric of our nation.
There is, its symbolism — of the promise unfulfilled, the urgent oath, reduced to lazy execution.
The only positive on 9/11 and the days and weeks that so slowly and painfully followed it… was the unanimous humanity, here, and throughout the country. The government, the President in particular, was given every possible measure of support.
Those who did not belong to his party — tabled that.
Those who doubted the mechanics of his election — ignored that.
Those who wondered of his qualifications — forgot that.
History teaches us that nearly unanimous support of a government cannot be taken away from that government, by its critics.
It can only be squandered by those who use it not to heal a nation’s wounds, but to take political advantage.
Terrorists did not come and steal our newly-regained sense of being American first, and political, fiftieth. Nor did the Democrats. Nor did the media. Nor did the people.
The President — and those around him — did that.
They promised bi-partisanship, and then showed that to them, "bi-partisanship" meant that their party would rule and the rest would have to follow, or be branded, with ever-escalating hysteria, as morally or intellectually confused; as appeasers; as those who, in the Vice President’s words yesterday, "validate the strategy of the terrorists."
They promised protection, and then showed that to them "protection" meant going to war against a despot whose hand they had once shaken… a despot who we now learn from our own Senate Intelligence Committee, hated Al-Qaeda as much as we did.
The polite phrase for how so many of us were duped into supporting a war, on the false premise that it had ’something to do’ with 9/11, is "lying by implication."
The impolite phrase, is "impeachable offense."
Not once in now five years has this President ever offered to assume responsibility for the failures that led to this empty space… and to this, the current, curdled, version of our beloved country.
Still, there is a last snapping flame from a final candle of respect and fairness: even his most virulent critics have never suggested he alone bears the full brunt of the blame for 9/11.
Half the time, in fact, this President has been so gently treated, that he has seemed not even to be the man most responsible — for anything — in his own administration.
Yet what is happening this very night?
A mini-series, created, influenced — possibly financed by — the most radical and cold of domestic political Machiavellis, continues to be televised into our homes.
The documented truths of the last fifteen years are replaced by bald-faced lies; the talking points of the current regime parroted; the whole sorry story blurred, by spin, to make the party out of office seem vacillating and impotent, and the party in office, seem like the only option.
How dare you, Mr. President, after taking cynical advantage of the unanimity and love, and transmuting it into fraudulent war and needless death… after monstrously transforming it into fear and suspicion and turning that fear into the campaign slogan of three elections… how dare you or those around you… ever "spin" 9/11.

Just as the terrorists have succeeded — are still succeeding — as long as there is no memorial and no construction here at Ground Zero…
So too have they succeeded, and are still succeeding — as long as this government uses 9/11 as a wedge to pit Americans against Americans.
This is an odd point to cite a television program, especially one from March of 1960. But as Disney’s continuing sell-out of the truth (and this country) suggests, even television programs can be powerful things.
And long ago, a series called "The Twilight Zone" broadcast a riveting episode entitled "The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street."
In brief: a meteor sparks rumors of an invasion by extra-terrestrials disguised as humans. The electricity goes out. A neighbor pleads for calm.
Suddenly his car — and only his car — starts. Someone suggests he must be the alien. Then another man’s lights go on.
As charges and suspicion and panic overtake the street, guns are inevitably produced.
An "alien" is shot — but he turns out to be just another neighbor, returning from going for help.
The camera pulls back to a near-by hill, where two extra-terrestrials areseen, manipulating a small device that can jam electricity. The veteran tells his novice that there’s no need to actually attack, that you just turn off a few of the human machines and then, "they pick the most dangerous enemy they can find, and it’s themselves."
And then, in perhaps his finest piece of writing, Rod Serling sums it up with words of remarkable prescience, given where we find ourselves tonight.
"The tools of conquest do not necessarily come with bombs and explosions and fallout. There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, prejudices - to be found only in the minds of men.
"For the record, prejudices can kill and suspicion can destroy, and a thoughtless, frightened search for a scapegoat has a fallout all its own — for the children, and the children yet unborn."

When those who dissent are told time and time again — as we will be, if not tonight by the President, then tomorrow by his portable public chorus — that he is preserving our freedom, but that if we use any of it, we are somehow un-American…
When we are scolded, that if we merely question, we have "forgotten the lessons of 9/11"… look into this empty space behind me and the bi-partisanship upon which this administration also did not build, and tell me:
Who has left this hole in the ground?
We have not forgotten, Mr. President.
You have.
May this country forgive you.

Imagine

On the Anniversary of 9/11, Remember Afghanistan

On the anniversary of the attacks of September 11th, please take a moment to remember the American men and women fighting in Afghanistan. Here are the stories of four IAVA members who served or are serving in what has become, for many, a "forgotten war."

James Downen served with a civil affairs unit in Afghanistan - where he met his future wife, Becky Berndt, a fellow soldier and a medic.

Keith Kluwe served as a combat journalist in Afghanistan. Read his story about the evacuation of a severely wounded soldier from Bagram Air Force Base.

Ronald "Sonny" Faulseit worked closely with the Afghan National Army. He tells the story of a 4 AM RPG attack.

Read a recent blog entry from a US Army Captain still serving in Afghanistan today.

Thank you for your continued support of IAVA.
