Torture

Not a Principle of this Nation!

Though practiced, over the years, clandestine, when found out about there once were Very Loud Condemnations arising from the Citizens of the United States Forcing Laws to be pass to Stop these Extremely Dangerous Practices, which can lead to Hatreds and Retaliation by others, as to our own Security of Nation and Citizens.
This Country also were the Principle Participants in Writing the Laws as to Conduct of the Rules of War and Human Rights, Worldwide, as well as to our own domestic laws.
As we kept Lists, updated yearly, of Countries who we Condemned for 'Human Rights' Violations.

'We' now have Changed the Principles of what this Nation is in this 21st Century!

'We' have become what was once Condemned!

'We' are now the Largest 'Terrorist' State on the Planet, with Preemptive Attacks on Innocent Countries.

'WE' label others as Terrorists under any and all excuses we can think of.

'WE' Continue the Support of Countries Leaders that Suppress their own, a long time practice of our Foreign Policy.

'WE' start extremely negative propaganda campaigns against smaller nation states forcing them to look for whatever they feel they made need to protect themselves from the Giant 'Terrorist' State and refuse to use the Diplomacy of Intelligent Moderates who know Destruction only brings on More of Same.

These practices are All done 'In Our Names'!

And now the Stamp of Approval will be placed on a New Law Of This Land that we Except the Torture of Others, and possibly our own!

This 'New Law', will be the stage for a long battle of the Dangerous Direction the few have chosen for this Nation, and It Will Be Overturned. But from the Stamp of Approval to the Overturning as Unlawful, how many will 'We' Torture, some dying, as Hatreds will grow against us by all who know them, to add to the already spinning out of control Hatreds growing out of our present out of control Foreign Policies, made by a few who talk tough but hide behind others to protect themselves!

How many more of our 'Freedoms' and 'Democracy' will we loose as we Destroy little countries and thier people in the name of bringing them 'Freedom' and 'Democracy'!

What Does This Country Really Stand For Now

A Total Rollback Of Everything This Country Has Stood For:
Sen. Patrick Leahy Blasts Congressional Approval of Detainee Bill * The Senate has agreed to give President Bush extraordinary power to detain and try prisoners in the so-called war on terror. The legislation strips detainees of the right to challenge their own detention and gives the President the power to detain them indefinitely. The bill also immunizes U.S. officials from prosecution for torturing detainees who the military and the CIA captured before the end of last year. We get reaction from Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) and Michael Ratner of the Center for Constitutional Rights.

Religion is used to justify everything that Most should Condemn but because of any religious undertones is than Propagandized to make as many as possible Except the actions as 'Gods Will', and many of us supposedly Intelligent Human Animals 'Do'!!

This so called 'Jesus{?} Camp' is nothing more than the Enhancement of the Sick Ego's of those that do these types things. It's Pure 'Brain Washing' and 'Propaganda' at it's Extreme, again to Build Up the Twisted Ego's of supposed Religious, Compassionant, Intelligent{?}, etc. Adults with their Twisted Idea's of 'They Are Right and All Others Are Wrong!'!!

Thank you for fighting for my freedom

As Posted By Bammo, a brother 'Nam Vet, over at the Veterans For America Weblog, with link to this HERE.

I was reading an article by Chris Kok from the Kent State online news. The name of the article was "The military does not make freedom, the people do". The words in this article caught me off guard, I read it twice and took a few notes for this blog.

I wear colors of the Vietnam War when riding my motorcycle and most of times when I am not on it. I always have and probably always will wear these Vietnam colors I wear these colors because the Bro's that wear them are a part of history America wants to forget - The Vietnam War. It was not long ago when a person seen these colors and didn't want any part of ya' because you were a loser, a disgrace to the land of Uncle Sam. I also wear them to remember my Bro's whose blood was spilled in a fiasco based on complete bull shit like the one the SHRUB quickly got us into in Iraq. There are not many differences between the two if one sits down and compares them, but this is not about that, this is about the people that so oftenly approach me and say "thank you for fighting for my freedom". Seriously, I have had beaucoup people approach me since the "SHRUB" fiasco began and told me this shit and tried to shake my hand. My answer to them was "I did not fight for your freedom, I fought to stay the hell alive and make sure my Bro's did the same damn thing". These people look shocked and insulted that I am not taking this as some kind of compliment. I proceed to tell them Uncle Ho (Chi Mihn) was not coming over to the U.S. to rape and pillage your family and friends. Uncle Ho was no threat to the U.S.A. and the same damn thing is going down today with your tax dollar in Iraq. Their reply, "our brave troops are fighting a war on terroism in Iraq, how dare you belittle them".

By that time , I have already scoped out the Yellow Ribbon BS and "God Bless The U.S.A." trinketts that they proudly wear, and tell them politely to Fuck Off and go tell their bullshit to someone that cares. That usually gets these instant patriots that do not know a damn thing about whats going on with our country, never mind the friggin world - to move the hell on. Where the hell does the U.S. of A. grow these morons? I am not trying to belittle the G.I. in any way, shape or form. Orders are ordes and a G.I. has to follow them or pay the consequences, but fighting for our freedom - drop the fad numb nuts and face reality.

There are a lot of sheople that have this bull shit brain that thinks we in the U.S. have freedom because of our armed forces. Lets face facts here - the sheople of today think that every war or conflict that Uncle Sammy has gotten into is connected in some strange way with keeping our freedom. This crap is far from the truth but makes number one propaganda for people like the Neocons to use on the sheople they govern. The Nam had nothing to do with stopping the spread of communism, but its main reason was to keep people of the same race in the same connected country from forming their own government. SHRUB'S Iraq is in no way about freedom or democracy. That horse shit is pure Neocon propaganda to jive up the support for this fiasco so the bucks keep rolling in. The Neocons use our G.I.'s in the same propaganda hype and ya' know what? A shit load of sheople buy that BS and swear by it as well!

What the hell is freedom then? Freedom is to do as one pleases as long as others are not harmed, freedom is havig input into one's government.

The SHRUB wants his sheople to buy that his fiasco in Iraq is for keeping freedom amongst us. He tells us over and over we were attacked because we are a free country. Ya' know if that crap had any truth, the main target would of been Europe for al-Qaida. A large percentage of Europe's forms of governments offer services and listen more to their citizens needs and wishes than the two party buy your way into office system in the U.S. Europe has many symbols of freedom that the U.S. does not have. And it doesn't take much imagination to know what these freedoms are. Why al-Qaida attacked the U.S. had nothing to do with our freedom at all.
In the U.S. the main threat to freedom is not al-Qaida, it is from the Neocons that now run this country. These are the same SOB'S that love to wave the flag and yell freedom but want to regulate peoples lives and personal liberties. In fact these same flag wavin' Neocons are stripping freedoms and liberties away from us daily. A prime example is the power that is given to the Dept. of Homeland Security by these Neocons.

I see this in print and hear people say this many times, "freedom isn't free".

Doesn't this BS express the opposite of what it really and truly means? It means freedom has a pricetag whose price is our military might is second to none. This propaganda is used to promote U.S. domination around the world. What the hell does that have to do with freedom?

Ya' know it is upsetting that a noble word like freedom makes wonderful propaganda. Just wander back in our lands history politicians frequently boasted about the Free World, where legal segregation was allowed to blacks and their right to vote did not exist. That was not to many years ago if one really dwells on the subject. The word freedom was used extensively during the Vietnam War as people were forced to perform military service. By the way, I am all for that draft once again. Why should only a small percentage carry the burden of the SHRUB fiasco? The way I think, that is not freedom that is unjust and is not fair to the people that military recruiting is aimed at, and the ones that are serving.

Seriously, if the military was used to protect against invaion, instead of going forward with imperialistic motives, then I would agree that the military was protecting freedom. Like I said earlier about our G.I.'S that serve our country now. I admire their willingness to protect freedom but sadly that is not the orders they are given.Freedom is not obtained by the government or the military. Freedom comes from the hearts of the people. Quoting Utah Phillips album, "freedom is something you assume". Then you wait for someone to take it away from you. The amount to which you resist is the amount to which you are free.I know I will get thanked again for supposidly fighting for someones freedom! But ya' know the thanks are coming a lot less and I hope the sheople are finally getting reprogramed to whats really going down! Lets hope so, as sheople that love this country.Like to give a high five to Chris Kok at Kent State for inspiring me with his awesome article!!

Report on "Crimes of the Oval Office" Public Discussion

Here is a report on impeachment from a new
member of the LA chapter of VFP.

VFP National Office
I'm a new member of Veterans for Peace, responding to your call for a
report from an attendee at the Sept. 13 "public conversation" on
presidential impeachment at the University of California, Los Angeles,
featuring former White House counsel John W. Dean and former
Congresswoman and Judiciary Committee member Elizabeth Holtzman. Both
were central figures in the impeachment proceedings against President
Richard Nixon in 1974.

Dean and Holtzman each have recently written books addressing this
subject: Dean, Worse Than Watergate (Little, Brown, April 2004), and
Holtzman, The Impeachment of George W. Bush (Nation Books, September
2006). The views they expressed in Los Angeles on Sept. 13 are well
summarized in interviews conducted on Sept. 12 by Truthdig managing
editor Blair Golson, at

John Dean, Impeachment

and

Elizabeth Holtzman, Impeachment.

Holtzman asserted that there is no question of George W. Bush's having
committed a number of "high crimes and misdemeanors," each of which
for calls for impeachment -- not so much as matters of criminality,
but as abuses of power: intentionally deceiving the public [with
regard to Iraq]; deliberately ignoring the law [wiretapping]; failure
to comply with a treaty [the Geneva conventions]; abdication of
responsibilities of the office [Katrina]. Holtzman feels our
"constitutional democracy is at stake." The only question for her is
whether the public has the will to undertake the proceedings. This
must be clearly demonstrated to Congress (regardless of which party is
in control) before it will act. Dean is more cautious, stating that
the grounds for impeachment are strong only where there has been
direct and harmful action, such as taking the country to war in a
deliberate deception, which he acknowledges was the case with Iraq.

Holtzman noted that the press today shows little inclination to
aggressively explore the issues, as it did in 1973-74. Dean feels the
public today is still not nearly as aware of the presidential abuses
of power as it was then, when a special prosecutor (Archibald Cox) was
already at work, dramatically revealing a succession of shocking
misdeeds. (A September 2006 CNN poll showed 69% of Americans still
opposed to impeaching Bush.) And in the case of Nixon, in contrast to
the later proceedings against President Clinton, the primary
motivation was one of principle, not politics. Legislators, as well
as the top officials at the Justice Department, respected the law and
followed their individual consciences, rather than blindly submitting
to the leadership as they are prone to do today.

Dean argued that a new, Democrat-controlled House of Representatives
would "have a duty to tell Americans what the Bush administration has
been up to the past six years," but it "would be forced to start from
scratch, hiring investigators and legal staff, and then commencing an
investigation against a presidency that has made stonewalling into an
art form." And for it to do so, facing the likelihood that a new but
still Republican-controlled Senate would not vote for conviction,
could be harmful to the nation. Another political debacle like the
Clinton investigation could severely weaken the stature of the
Constitution's impeachment clauses.

Dean does not entirely rule out impeachment, even in that likely
situation, and he expressed faith in the good judgment of potential
Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers to conduct a thorough and
responsible inquiry. But he left the impression that he would hope
instead for a resignation, or even be content to await the 2008
election -- to spare the country the agony and distraction of what
might become a protracted and all-consuming political battle, and to
preserve the integrity of the Constitution. As he said in the Sept.
12 Truthdig interview, "Democracy, and our constitutional machinery,
is quite sturdy, but they cannot withstand endless incautious
political abuses."

Subject: VFP Letter to Congress about War Crimes Act

To All Members of the United States Congress,

cc: All members of the U.S. Armed Forces; the American people

In the past five years, since the horrific attacks of September 11, 2001, the people of our nation have been told time and time again that the world has changed, we have a new enemy and we must change to fight that enemy. This argument has been presented over and over to justify deviations from and at times dismissal of our nation’s basic ideals.

Veterans For Peace and millions of other U.S. citizens believe the time has come to return to our nation’s core beliefs as called for by our Declaration of Independence and Constitution, the rule of law, justice and the recognition of all people’s unalienable human and civil rights.

Recent news reports indicate that the Bush administration is seeking legislation to eliminate key elements of the War Crimes Act. Veterans For Peace believes such an effort is an attempt by administration officials to protect themselves from prosecution, even as they prosecute enlisted men and women for actions committed under their command in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere.

It is the highest form of hypocrisy to claim to support our troops while allowing the policy makers and planners of a war of choice, that we believe is illegal, immoral and unjust, to change existing law to protect themselves from prosecution for committing war crimes after ordering the troops to war.

It is obvious that these officials are trying to change the law because they believe they have broken the law.

How convenient for them that they have the power to persuade you to protect them.
How inconvenient for the soldier on the ground who must follow their orders.
Veterans For Peace vehemently insists that Congress:

(1) Reject any effort to weaken the 1996 War Crimes Act (USC §2441), and

(2) Based on USC §2441 and Article II of the Constitution, which makes treaties ratified by the U.S. Senate the supreme law of the land, initiate impeachment proceedings
against President Bush and Vice-President Cheney for the war crimes they have committed and for the treaties they have violated by the invasion and occupation of Iraq; including, but by no means limited to, waging a war of aggression, crimes against peace, and war crimes.

Veterans For Peace reminds Congress that the Uniform Code of Military Justice already applies the Geneva Conventions to everyone in the U.S. military. The purpose of the War Crimes Act is to provide the same accountability to the military's civilian leaders.

Gutting the War Crimes Act will exempt high government officials from the very war crimes charges they are now leveling against enlisted men and women and in some cases asking for the death penalty.

It is easy to claim adherence to high ideals in times of prosperity and relative comfort. The test is in time of challenge and adversity.

We face such times today. Will we live up to what we claim to be; land of the free and home of the brave? The American people as a whole must answer these questions but you are in elected positions to take a lead.

Hold the Bush administration accountable for its actions. Support our troops.

Do not create a double standard, one for the troops another for the administration.

We have no Kings in the United States. No one is above the law.

We have a President and he is a servant of the people. Even in times of war.

Urgently,
David Cline, President

"Charlotte Becomes the Nexus of the Anti-War Movement..."

The World Can't Wait
Grief propels one mother toward activism
BY KAREN SHUGART
Published 09.27.06
Charlotte will become an emotional nexus of the antiwar movement on Sat., Sept. 30, as nationally known activists converge at a rally calling for the impeachment of President Bush. Almost certainly the largest such rally the city has seen, it will feature Ann Wright, a former diplomat and Army veteran; Summer Lipford, the mother of Pfc. Steven Sirko, a soldier who died in Iraq; and Nadia McCaffrey, whose son, Sgt. Patrick McCaffrey, was shot to death by the Iraqi soldiers he was training.
Sgt. McCaffrey's death attracted national attention after his mother invited the media to Sacramento International Airport to document the return of his flag-draped coffin from Iraq. Military policy prohibits news cameras from photographing coffins of American troops when they arrive at military basis.
Charlotte GreensA MOTHER STANDS UP: Nadia McCaffrey has fought to find out the truth about the death of her son, Sgt. Patrick McCaffrey.
Thirty-four-year-old Sgt. McCaffrey signed up for the National Guard the day after Sept. 11. His mother was initially told that his death on June 22, 2004, was the result of an insurgent attack and was instantaneous. She later learned it was neither. Two years after his death, the military told Nadia McCaffrey, now an anti-war activist and leader of Gold Star Families for Peace, that her son had in fact been shot to death by the Iraqi soldiers he was training. She spoke with Creative Loafing by phone from her California home.
The following interview has been edited for clarity and length:
Nadia McCaffrey: My son was not a military person at all. When 9/11 happened, he was in shock; so was I. He wanted to find something to do for the country. He spoke to different people and thought of the National Guard. He checked the history of the Guard, saw since World War II they had not been deployed. There were a few in Vietnam, but they were not in combat. Or Korea. He felt very safe. They are deployed in cases of extreme emergency, as we know. Or we used to know.
(Then) a short time after 2001, Patrick was told that he would be deployed to Iraq. He became very quiet. He didn't tell his wife and me immediately. He was my only child. Finally, he said, mom why don't you come for a ride with me? He finally told me. I didn't say a word. I just felt the weight of what it meant on my shoulder. He said, don't fear the worst. We don't have a choice.
CL: What did he think about the war before he went over?
He didn't understand, why Iraq? He saw maybe the logic of going to Afghanistan, but Iraq was never involved in anything concerning 9/11.
He told me, "Mom, I know what you think. But I signed this paper and to me, it is a matter of honor." He also was very hopeful in helping the citizens rebuild. He shifted his negativity. Once he was there of course, it took him about 10 days to realize that nothing that he was told was true. He was totally shocked. Gradually his hope faded. Just a couple of days before he was shot, he was, not in a depression, but in a very heavy space that was not him. He said to me, "Mom, I don't think I'll make it back." He described a few things that had happened. They were shot at twice before he was killed. The second time he did a report, arrested two people, and nothing was done about it. Those people who shot them were part of the Iraqi soldiers that he was training. They finally killed him.
Do you think you'll ever have all the truth about your son's death?
Yes, I do. But I will do it by myself. We were told, the families were told, that Patrick and (1st Lt. Andre) Tyson were shot in an ambush and killed by insurgents. I didn't stay believing this long. I started to talk to the soldiers. I realized they were killed by the soldiers they were training. I wanted to know why. Finally, I was fed up with the situation. So I went to Barbara Boxer, the California senator's office. She immediately wrote a letter to the Pentagon demanding answers right away.
Just a week or so after this letter from the senator, I get a phone call. This was the worst day of my life. It was worse, I think, than the day I received the phone call that was Patrick was killed. I had been told [originally] he was shot three times and died on the spot. It's not true. He was shot eight times. He was left on the ground to bleed to death, while the two other soldiers were evacuated. One combat lifesaver realized he was alive, but by the time he got on base, he had bled to death. They denied this at first. The autopsy report shows that when the body bag was open, Patrick still had a breathing tube in and also some cardiac patches on his chest.
How soon did you become an activist?

Courtesy Nadia McCaffrey MAKING THE BEST OF WAR: In this photo, taken about 40 minutes before his death, Sgt. Patrick McCaffrey holds flowers given to him by Iraqi children. The morning after Patrick was killed, we had a line of media down the street really early in the morning. Someone [from the media] asked, "Do you want us to be there for his return at the airport?" I thought very shortly and said, "Yes, of course. I want this country to see my son come home." They all looked at me and said, "You understand there is a ban on pictures of flag-draped coffins coming home from Iraq?" I said, "Yes, this is my son. He left in the broad daylight." The family was behind me.
Are you here more to protest the war or call for Bush's impeachment -- or both?
I want to see this government out, too. We need to stand up for our country. We the people need to do something. This is what I believe.

Veterans For Peace Answer Critics of Memorials and Vigils

For Immediate Release

Veterans For Peace

NEWS ADVISORY CONTACT: David Cline (201) 876-0430
September 27, 2006 Michael T. McPhearson (314) 303 – 8874

Veterans For Peace Answer Critics of Memorials and Vigils

Who: Veterans For Peace, a national organization of military veterans including men and women from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War, the Iraq War, other conflicts and “peacetime.”

What: Address critics of Vigils and Memorials held by members and chapters of Veterans For Peace

Vigils and Arlington Memorials are important and effective initiatives by local Veterans For Peace chapters. These memorials are conducted to make the consequences of war real and to allow people to express their grief, respect and thoughts. As a result of the power of these memorials and stance against war, Veterans For Peace has come under attack from some quarters, mostly by people who support the war in Iraq.

A number of Gold Star Families have accused Veterans For Peace of using the names of the Fallen to deliberately cause pain and suffering. The President of Veterans For Peace David Cline says, "When a few of the Fallen’s families began to contact us, our national board discussed it and set a policy including the family’s wishes. We have told our chapters that if Fallen family members objects to a name being used in one of our memorials or vigils, the name should be removed. Our purpose is not to cause grief to parents or spouses of dead soldiers."

Veterans For Peace does not concede the right to use the names of the Fallen. Executive Director Michael McPhearson stated, “When a service member dies the whole nation mourns. Our organization conducts memorials and vigils to honor the dead and remind the living of the cost of war. Our belief that the Bush administration has sent our service members to fight an illegal war does not diminish our respect or honor for those who fight and have fallen. However, some Gold Star Family members have asked us to discontinue the use of their loved one’s name. Our policy reflects their input.”

Veterans For Peace is a national organization founded in 1985. It is structured around a national office in Saint Louis, MO and comprised of members across the country organized in chapters or as at-large members. The organization includes men and women veterans from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War, Iraq war other, conflicts and peacetime veterans. Our collective experience tells us wars are easy to start and hard to stop and that those hurt are often the innocent. Thus, other means of problem solving are necessary.

VFP Memorials and Vigil Policy

VFP POLICY FOR ARLINGTON AND OTHER MEMORIALS TO THE FALLEN

Arlington Memorials are important and effective initiatives by local Veterans For Peace chapters. These memorials are conducted to make the consequences of war real and to allow people to express their grief, respect and thoughts. As a result of the power of these memorials and our stance against war, Veterans For Peace has come under attack from some quarters, mostly people who support the war in Iraq.

However, VFP has also received a few complaints from Gold Star family members. These wishes should be taken into consideration when conducting the Arlington Memorials, thus the following policy has been adopted by the National Board of Directors. The Directors request that all VFP chapters and affiliated memorials follow these guidelines for the use of the names of the fallen and recognition of the deaths of Iraqis and other victims of war.

POLICY: The names of the fallen are released by the Department of Defense and they are published weekly throughout the country as part of the public record. Several Veterans For Peace memorials and vigils list a number or all of the names of the fallen on name tags, or other means and post them on crosses, tombstones, boots or other items to represent those service members who have lost their lives in the occupation and war in Iraq. Veterans For Peace conducts these events to remember and honor those who have given their lives in their country's service, and to offer friends, relatives and those who served in the military with the deceased an opportunity to pay their respects.

If an immediate family member (mother, father or spouse) personally requests that we not post a person's name publicly, VFP chapters and members should (1) honor these requests and the name of the person should be kept on file, so that visitors wishing to honor that person may do so in a manner of their own choosing and (2) get this request in writing and contact the national office so that the information is given to all memorials affiliated with Veterans For Peace.

The Arlington's and other memorials are primarily in honor of fallen U.S. service members. However, in accordance with the mission of Veterans For Peace; to increase the public awareness of the cost of war and to seek justice for veterans and victims of war, it is equally important to remember the civilian lives lost. When possible, shoes, photographs or other appropriate images or symbols should accompany the memorials or vigils in remembrance of the Iraqi and other civilian deaths.

Battlefield Flashbacks

For many Vietnam veterans, the Iraq war is a trauma trigger.
By Dan Ephron
Newsweek

Oct. 2, 2006 issue - Scott Cameron and Dennis Kanke had a lot in common. Residents of Duluth, Minn., both fought in Vietnam and returned home with traumas that lingered for decades. Both clawed their way out of the pit with the help of therapy and medication. And both fell back into it when the Iraq invasion began more than three years ago, with war scenes on television triggering nightmares and flashbacks. "It all came rushing back," says Cameron, a sinewy 56-year-old who took a bullet in the spine in 1969 and went on to have more than 40 operations. When the depression got really bad, Cameron checked himself into a trauma clinic in 2004, where he spent nine weeks with other war veterans affected by Iraq. Kanke, by contrast, coped by shutting off TV news and occasionally reaching out for help from friends. In August of that year, Cameron got a call from Kanke, who wanted company on his boat. "I'd been on the road for two hours and couldn't drive anymore. I told him to go to sleep and I'd see him in the morning," Cameron recalls. Instead, Kanke poured a can of gasoline over himself and lit a match, dying in a hospital three days later.

Psychologists have long known that new wars can reopen old wounds for veterans. When U.S. troops fought in Iraq in 1991, clinics of the government's Veterans Affairs (VA) administration were flooded with calls from distressed former soldiers. But some researchers now believe the current Iraq war is particularly vexing for Vietnam veterans because of the ways it is similar to the conflict they fought 40 years ago: the grinding guerrilla warfare, the constant brush with civilians and the political debate back home. Max Cleland, the former senator and Vietnam War veteran, gave the phenomenon a public face when he disclosed last month that scenes from Iraq had made him depressed. His chief of staff told NEWSWEEK that Cleland has been getting trauma counseling at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington since the start of the war. He's clearly not alone. In a small study conducted at Cleveland State University earlier this year, half of the Vietnam veterans surveyed said they felt emotional distress over Iraq. And figures put out by the VA show a 36 percent rise since 2003 in the number of Vietnam vets seeking help for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Veterans and their therapists say watching coverage of Iraq or reading about it can make some former soldiers feel like they're back in battle, and can trigger some of the old sensations—the deep anxiety and the hypervigilance. Jim Doyle, of Fresno, Calif., says his anxieties are set off by news of the casualties in Iraq. "When I see a headline—two Marines killed, three soldiers wounded—I see the faces of the guys I was with 36 years ago."

Some therapists have been coaching veterans to tune out. Thomas Bennett, who counsels former soldiers at a VA center on Martha's Vineyard, says watching TV "becomes over-stimulating for them and then they have trouble sleeping." Bennett says some of his patients have required more medication to cope with Iraq-related stress. The VA has also adopted the switch-it-off treatment. Earlier this summer the VA explicitly told veterans suffering from PTSD not to watch "Baghdad ER," a documentary that follows the wrenching events in an American combat-support hospital in Iraq.

Kanke, the Duluth veteran, had been a Marine photographer, which meant he was regularly taking shots of bodies and battle zones. After the war, doctors diagnosed him as 100 percent disabled due to PTSD. His widow, Carol, says her husband suffered from depression long before Iraq but had been improving. The war put him off course. He grew distant from loved ones, including his chil-dren and grandchildren, and he dropped weight, she says. On the night of his suicide, after talking by phone to Cameron, Kanke roused Carol and pushed her out of the house before setting himself on fire. She says she watched the fire from the outside, then tried to douse her husband with a garden hose. "We had a wonderful life. But when the war started, he just got more and more depressed. He didn't handle things' going wrong very well," she says. Now she's hoping her husband's story will help other veterans spot the symptoms and avoid his fate.

And Another Great Pitt Observation Editorial

William Rivers Pitt | The Deep Breath Before the Plunge

William Rivers Pitt writes: "It seems the invasion and occupation of Iraq has spawned a new generation of radicalized men and women willing to die for the privilege of taking American soldiers, or you, or me, with them. The information contained in the newest National Intelligence Estimate, considered to be the most authoritative report on the subject, was so unutterably damning that even the White House was forced to cede the point."

And Another Great Dahr Jamail Write Up

Dahr Jamail | A Broken, De-Humanized Military in Iraq

Dahr Jamail writes: "While the deranged chicken-hawks who 'lead' the US continue their efforts to wage another unprovoked war of aggression, this time against Iran, what's left of their already overstretched military continues to be bled in Iraq. When the situation is so critical that even the corporate media is forced to report on it, you know it's bad."

THE BEST WAR EVER

“Lies got us into this war. Only the truth will get us out.”

The Best War Ever, by the best-selling authors of Weapons of Mass Deception, is a vital account of why America is losing in Iraq and the Middle East. We have met the enemy—and it's our own PR machine. One of the most tragic consequences of the Bush administration's reliance on spin, the authors argue, is its disdain for realistic planning. Repeatedly, when faced with predictions of problems, policymakers dismissed the warnings of Iraq experts, choosing instead to promulgate their own version of the war through conservative media outlets and PR campaigns. And as the book reveals, they're still doing it—as the people who sold us the war in Iraq are now trying to sell an expansion into Syria and Iran.

Did You Think We Wouldn't Notice, Mr. Wallace?

Chris Wallace proves himself to be disingenuous when being "surprised" by Clinton calling him out on being a hack.

U.S a Dictatorship?

You call it, but it looks exactly like that is where we are heading, 'Big Brother' picked up the speed!!
We are looking more like the old Soviet Style, and have been as we rapidly progress, than anything even close to a real Democracy!!
Just look at the lack of Oversite of our Congressional Representatives and lack of making Policies for the whole Society as they Rubber Stamp the Executive Branch in Everything, making a One Government Branch Power Structure leaving out 'The People'!!

Appeal for Redress

From: Appeal for Redress

I am writing to engage you on the Active Duty military project, a movement that will help end the occupation in Iraq and bring our love ones home.
The Active Duty military project is an initiative led by active duty service members and supported by veteran peace organizations including Military Families Speak Out (MSO).
Department of Defense regulation 7050.6, the Military Whistleblower Act, gives all of our service members the right to send a protected communication to a member of Congress.
This project is geared towards mobilizing appeals for redress from our service members in the United States and deployed/stationed throughout the world.
Our immediate goal is the mobilization of five to ten-thousand appeals for redress from active-duty military to be sent to members of Congress who support our cause. Our project will culminate with a formal appeal to our government during the national
celebration of Dr. Martin L. King, Jr.
We are asking you to share this project with your love one and ask them to file an appeal. The appeal is private and will not be shared publicly. We can put you in touch with the active duty organizers on the ground in Norfolk, VA to share more details with you.
Go to Appeal for Redress to learn more about the project and to file an appeal. If you wish for your loved one to file a hard copy appeal, contact Opio Sokoni HERE.

Many active duty, reserve, and guard service members are concerned about the war in Iraq and support the withdrawal of U.S. troops. The Appeal for Redress provides a way in which individual service members can appeal to their member of Congress to urge an end to the U.S. military occupation. The Appeal will reach thousands of service members who seek redress from the war. The Appeal messages will be delivered to members of Congress on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in January 2007.
The wording of the Appeal for Redress is short and simple. It is patriotic and respectful in tone:
“As a patriotic American proud to serve the nation in uniform, I respectfully urge my political leaders in Congress to support the prompt withdrawal of all American military forces and bases from Iraq. Staying in Iraq will not work and is not worth the price. It is time for U.S. troops to come home.”
The Appeal lists these grievances:
• The fabricated justification for war (nonexistent weapons of mass destruction)
• The failure to provide troops adequate protection and preparation for combat
• The human cost in thousands of deaths and severe injuries among American service members
• The cost to American taxpayers and diversion of resources from other priorities (inadequate response to Katrina, etc.)
Several organizations have come together to form a support committee to assist active duty service members. The organizations include Veterans for Peace, Iraq Veterans Against the War, and Military Families Speak Out. The committee serves at the discretion of active duty service members.
The Appeal for Redress will circulate initially among active duty service members in communities near military bases, beginning in Norfolk and Quantico. The Appeal will also circulate on the Internet through a web site with sign-on function to facilitate service member participation. An Internet message with the Appeal will be sent to thousands of individual service members, who will be encouraged to forward the message to others, in the hope that it goes viral.
Attorneys and counselors experienced in military law have been contacted to provide assistance for any service members who encounter interference with their right to communicate with members of Congress. Participating service members will receive a fact sheet describing the rights and restrictions that apply to the exercise of First Amendment rights in the military.
Members of Congress are being asked to encourage and
support the Appeal through a statement that reads:

“We respect and welcome this initiative from our brave men and women in uniform. We look forward to receiving the Appeals and sharing your important perspectives with colleagues in the Congress.”
Professional public relations assistance will be available to expose any interference with service member rights that occurs and to ensure that the Appeal for Redress attracts press attention at the time of delivery.
