The story below only appeared on our CBS website and was not aired on CBS. It is a story that is largely being ignored, even though this is taking place every single day in central Baghdad, two blocks from where our office is located.
Our crew had to be pulled out because we got a call saying they were about to be killed, and on their way out, a civilian man was shot dead in front of them as they ran.
I would be very grateful if any of you have a chance to watch this story and pass the link on to as many people you know as possible. It should be seen. And people should know about this.
If anyone has time to send a comment to CBS – about the story – not about my request, then that would help highlight that people are interested and this is not too gruesome to air, but rather too important to ignore.
Many, many thanks.

Drawn Into Jihad
Seventy Percent of Baghdad's Youth Are Not in School and Are Vulnerable, Officials Say
This was aired tonight on the ABC World News.
For all who are still young and have little ones nearby take a long hard look at them, than start thinking how you're going to explain the 'Why are we fighting these people?", when they are older and you're in that perverbial rocking chair. Because they are going to ask and you had better have a Damn Good Reason, because I'll be long gone, or to damn old, and I don't have one now nor will I than.
There isn't one!
One things for sure they probably won't ask "Why do they hate us so?" as the greater majority did here not long ago, they'll probably know at least a little bit of the past!

They won't be joining into the destructive forces because of a lack of things to do, it'll be because of the death and destruction we have wrought!
And keep in mind the trauma of the deaths and destruction they are witnessing bringing on the PTSD nightmares of their daily lives, and that many will turn those nightmares into a destructive force within!

Iraqi Kids Drawn Into Jihad
BAGHDAD, Iraq, Jan. 24, 2007 — A video that Iraqis are trading via e-mail and cell phones shows young boys reenacting the hanging of Saddam Hussein, child's play in the Iraq.
In this country, where nearly 50 percent of the population is under 18, a new generation is being raised on violence.
"A lot of my friends have been killed by explosions," said Zeen who has endured eight operations on his legs after a being hit by a terrorist bomb.
WE ARE DOING THIS, WE HAVE GIVEN THEM THIS LIFE, WE HAVE SHOWN THEM WHAT DEATH DESTRUCTION AND HATRED LOOKS LIKE!
The Education Ministry states elementary school attendance rates dropped from 75 percent in 2005 to 30 percent last year.

"These aren't kids who are terrorists or extremists," he said. "These are kids who have nothing else to do. Because they can't get to school, there's no clubs for them to join, they're being brought into this community of jihad."
Powers now heads War Kids Relief , which offers youth programs in Iraq.

For Americans to break our addiction to war, it will take families working together to live year-round the peace and joy to the world that we sing in Christmas and New Year’s greetings.
One of the tragedies of the war in Iraq is that our soldiers, many of whom are sons and daughters of Vietnam veterans, marched off to a war that bore all the warning signs of the disaster in Vietnam. Like their parents, they eagerly went off to fight in a foreign land they knew nothing about, for a cause that collapsed in the light of the actual facts. What does it take to break such a cycle of excitement and disaster?

My dear Friend K. sent me a photo of her country. A beautiful scenic view of a sunset, wishing that one day I will be able to visit this beauty spot where she lives.
I wanted to return in kind. So I checked not less than 100 pages on the Web.
I googled "Pictures of Iraq " "Photos from Iraq" and all that I could find were the following Pictures :
Tony Blair has rejected a call for an October pull-out of UK troops from Iraq - but ducked discussing the issue with MPs at a Commons debate on the conflict.
In a deliberate breach of parliamentary etiquette, the leaders of the Conservative and Liberal Democrat parties appeared in the chamber - despite Mr Blair's decision to attend a CBI conference of business leaders in London instead.

Flagscape puts toll in perspective:

The Register-Guard
The Register-Guard
Published: Monday, January 22, 2007
Hundreds of volunteers stoop, planting bright colors like nymphs creating a spring landscape.
Some passers-by on Sunday smiled as they came upon the vivid scene, stretching between Alder and University streets, and from the Knight Library to East 13th Avenue.
But their smiles evaporated as they learned that each of the 120,000 white flags symbolizes six or seven dead civilians since the start of the war in Iraq in 2003. And that the patch of 3,000 red flags represents the 3,055 U.S. soldiers killed as of Saturday.
The flags are the Iraq Body Count Memorial, started in October at the University of Colorado, Boulder, in an attempt to make abstract death toll numbers more real to the public, said Monica Vaughan, a 24-year-old graduate student who helped bring the weeklong exhibit to the UO.
"We're trying to drive home the impact of the real cost of war, which is human lives," Vaughan said. "It's not necessarily a protest, it's a memorial."
Volunteers from the university and community began planting the markers at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, neatly placing them in the wet dirt in tidy rows. They finished just before 5 p.m.
As she planted flag after flag, Eugene resident Rachel Jordan said knowing that each represented at least six dead Iraqis was mind-boggling.
"I feel so sorry, it's hard to put it into words - it's just overwhelming," she said. "The war is so far removed from our daily lives. I just think it's a highly effective way to bring it home to people."
Nearly every person strolling through the area immediately began to read the many signs posted explaining the purpose of the memorial.
A mother explained to her two young sons that there were almost as many flags as the population of Eugene. A group of students snapped pictures on their camera phones. Many others took handfuls of flags and began sticking them into the ground.
"There's just so much, it's hard to even believe," UO freshman Jon Duppre said as he left the library, heading for his dorm. "I don't know what to feel. Those are human beings we're talking about, who had lives and families."
Vaughan said several student and community groups worked together to bring the exhibit to Eugene after some had seen the display in Colorado.
Creators hope to take the memorial on a national tour - with Lane Community College, Reed College in Portland and the University of California, Berkeley, already having expressed interest in hosting the flags, she said.
Along with raising consciousness and providing information, Vaughan said each site would also work to raise money to buy more flags in order to keep up with the rising death toll.
"I think it's important to come together in the community and mourn together," she said. "Even for people who are pro-war, it's a chance for them to mourn the dead."

Eid al Fitr at the End of Ramadan
Ramadan is a time of fasting and introspection for Muslims. Muslims give up vices and even fast through the day, to understand the plight of the poor and less fortunate.
Eid Al-Fitr is the celebration upon the end of Ramadan. According to wikipedia, for Muslims, Eid ul-Fitr is a joyous occasion with important religious significance, celebrating of the achievement of enhanced piety. It is a day of forgiveness, moral victory, peace of congregation, fellowship, brotherhood and unity. Muslims celebrate not only the end of fasting, but also thank God for the help and strength that they believe he gave them throughout the previous month to help them practice self-control. It is a time of giving and sharing, and many Muslims dress in holiday attire, and compare the spirit of the holiday to the “Christmas spirit” recognized by Christianity.
This week, Sunnis in Baghdad describe their experience of the Fitr holiday, and the breaking of the fast at the end of Ramadan.
As with WWI troop escalation, the "Big Push" in Iraq will likely do nothing to end the war and much to light the fuses of future ones.

News Crawl 1-21-07
The steadily rising Iraq war price tag will reach about $8.4 billion a month this year, Pentagon spokesmen said on Thursday, as heavy replacement costs for lost, destroyed and aging equipment mount.
The Pentagon has been estimating last year's costs for the increasingly unpopular war at about $8 billion a month, having increased from a monthly "burn rate" of around $4.4 billion during the first year of fighting in fiscal 2003.
US companies employing civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan have refused to settle workers' compensation and medical benefit claims for hundreds of war-zone injuries that range from back pain to post-traumatic stress.
A Globe review of rulings by administrative judges that resolve disputed claims found that Halliburton Co. , DynCorp International, and other US contractors have been ordered to pay millions of dollars in compensation to workers whose claims they initially denied. In some cases, the companies had fought the claims for years even though their own doctors agreed that a worker had been injured.
Judges ruled in favor of the employee three times as often as they ruled for the companies, according to the review.
Have you noticed? Neither President George W. Bush nor Vice President Dick Cheney have cited any U.S. intelligence assessments to support their fateful decision to send 21,500 more troops to referee the civil war in Iraq. This is a far cry from October 2002, when a formal National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) was rushed through in order to trick Congress into giving its nihil obstat for the attack on Iraq.
Government routinely lies, and so do many corporations. That mysterious commitment to the public good, which once joined Americans from many different classes and positions, seems to have dissolved. Integrity, which simply means being true regardless of consequences to one's own beliefs, seems to have no market value in America today.
US contingency planning for military action against Iran's nuclear program goes beyond limited strikes and would effectively unleash a war against the country, a former US intelligence analyst said on Friday.
"With the departure of his longtime friend Donald Rumsfeld, John Bolton's resignation as UN ambassador, and Democrats taking over Congress, times seem grim for the Dick Cheney wing of the Bush administration. The vice president's vision of a 'unitary executive' - otherwise known as the imperial presidency - will almost certainly be challenged by congressional oversight committees, and perhaps by the courts."
Americans angered by Bush's plans to escalate the Iraq war will flood the streets of Washington on Saturday, January 27, in a massive national peace march organized by United for Peace and Justice (UFPJ). Marchers will call on Congress to listen to the voters, not Bush, by using its power to end Bush's war and bring the troops home. The last three national marches organized by UFPJ each attracted between 300,000 and 500,000 people.
