The Dilemma of Black Patriotism

route66 has a diary up about today, Flag Day here in these United States.

I was going to post up something I found recently that attempts to explain some recent occurances on the meaning of 'Patriotism', and a tie in with 'route66' diary is appropriate on this day.

After all I'm one of the millions, in this country, who have been called 'UnPatriotic' for having not walked in lockstep with the criminal cabal, and their followers, who have led this country into it's extreme failed policies of an Occupation built on Lies and Fixed Intelligence and done in All Our Names!

I'm not a Black American, I'm one of us many Lilly White Folks.

I happend upon this article Defining patriotism the other day, with a Video at the top.

The article leads off with this:

Presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama’s patriotism came under suspicion when he decided not to wear the flag lapel pin.

Than a comment about what his wife said as well as the once Rev. of the church he attends had said, which we all know to well.

In the video we hear from Pulitzer-prize winning journalist Roger Wilkins, who says:

blacks have just as long a history of patriotism as other Americans, but “our patriotism is rooted in a country that abused us, our ancestors, in a terrible way.”
Wilkins wrote a book, Jefferson's Pillow: The Founding Fathers and the Dilemma of Black Patriotism, to answer the question of black patriotism: “How can you be patriotic when the historic moment that we revere the most, The Revolution, was run by a bunch of guys, many of whom owned slaves.”

Watch the video:

Do I understand what Barack says about the lapel flag pin,Yes!

Do I understand his wifes statement, Yes!

Do I understand where Rev. Wright is coming from, Yes!

Do I understand Roger Wilkins, Yes!

I grew up when Segregation was still very rampent in this Country, also learning the history of same through the books and movies on how we tried to totally eleminate the Natives of this Land and almost succeeded as some of our Lily White ancesters placed those that survived under our control!

When I finished the Navy Bootcamp, '67 to '71 was my tour of duty to country, my first duty station was the Meridian Naval Air Station, Meridian Miss., which is now also called McCain Field.

When I arrived there the trial of the killings of the young civil rights workers was just gearing up, made more infamous in the movie 'Mississippi Burning' and was to take place in Meridian some 15 miles from the base.

I was still there when Martin Luther King was Assasinated.

Back than Meridian was still a Heavily Segregated town, as was still most of the south. Black Americans who were serving this country stationed there were denied the freedoms and human rights they were serving under the constitution and flag for. When going into town they had seperate, and labeled, drinking fountains, movie theaters, eating establishments............................................................., everything!

After leaving there, a years tour, I went to Panama for the next year and a half. Panama is a country of many Black Latin Americans, yet right from the get go the Racist Attitude from the States hit.

On arriving and checking in, though being a seaman gunnersmate, I was to work at the Waterfront for the first couple of months, taking over the Base Armory later as the Gunnersmate running it was preparing to leave. One of the first questions asked, by the Navy LT, I was to work under, when checking in with him was "If I minded working under Black Navy Chiefs?", you had to see the way he looked to get the point, I sat there and just looked at him for a few than simply asked "Why?", his response was that there were two Black Chiefs in charge of the Waterfront. My response back was a simple "Nope" and again "Why?", no answer came.

Leaving there, and heading into my last year, I was sent to CounterInsurgency training in Coronado Calif, than In-Country Vietnam. Let me just say here, there are a huge number of Black and Brown and other skin color Americans, who served in Vietnam, whose names now are Honored on "The Wall", and if you pay any attention an awful lot who are dying and being maimed in todays Occupations!

Who are those accusing others, especially today, of not being Patriotic, why the Lily White Crowd!

Who are the ones condemning others for not wearing a tiny lapel flag pin, why the Lily White Crowd!

Who are the ones condemning Mrs. Obama and not understanding her statement of the History we now are living, why the Lily White Crowd!

Who are mostly the ones slapping cheap magnetic ribbons, now disappearing, on their vehicles to show their patriotism? and support?, why the Lily White Crowd!

Who are the ones Condemning Others for not walking in lockstep to their definition of patriotism, why the Lily White Crowd!

I could go on but I Hope you get the Picture I'm trying to paint here, We're Still A Racists Nation, and not only as to color of ones skin, Racism covers Hate of Others under any Reason, being Intolerant towards those who Share not only this Country but this Planet!

Happy Flag Day Everyone!!

And for you Fathers, Happy Fathers Day tomorrow!

Starting Sunday 6-15-08 - Guantanamo - McClatchy

For more than six years, the United States has held hundreds of men at Guantanamo — "the worst of the worst," in the words of former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. But the truth was different. McClatchy tracked down 66 men released from Guantanamo in the most systematic survey to date of prisoners held there. Many had no connection to terrorism, but their experience turned them against America.

Pentagon Denies Disability Benefits
The Pentagon has finally admitted to using harmful biological agents in a Cold War military project. But as David Martin reports, no recourse has been offered to the sailors who suffered because of it.

Chemicals Used Decades Ago May Have Sickened U.S. Military

Lawmakers and veterans of secret Cold War-era chemical and germ tests on military personnel demanded help from the Bush administration Thursday, but they got no satisfaction.

Officials from the Pentagon and Veterans Affairs Department said there was no need for legislation to guarantee health care and benefits to the veterans. Thousands of servicemembers were exposed, sometimes without their knowledge, to real and simulated chemical and biological agents, including sarin and VX.

Fighting the Army - "NOW"

On PBS NOW Tonight 6-13-08

Of the thousands of U.S. troops getting discharged from the Army each year, many who are suffering from post traumatic stress disorder and brain injuries aren't getting the vital care they need. The Army claims these soldiers have pre-existing mental illnesses or are guilty of misconduct. But advocates say this is a way for the Army to get rid of "problem" soldiers quickly, without giving them the treatment and benefits to which they're entitled.

This week, NOW travels to Fort Hood in Texas to meet traumatized soldiers fighting a new battle, this one against the army they served. Are soldiers being wrongfully discharged for honorable service?

The following comes from Medill Reports: Washington { Northwestern.edu }

Helping warriors find peace of mind

It's about a program started by psychiatrists called Give An Hour

"Give an Hour" is a network of psychiatrists hoping to change the way troops receive mental health care upon their return home

Much more is needed, and has been for a long time, but this is a good start, especially for the civilian professional, there have been some in the past but not enough , to not only try to help the soldier but to gain a better knowledge of PTSD themselves. That would help greatly in their profession in helping the civilian population that suffer through their own traumatic life experiances and develope PTSD usually suffering in silence not knowing how to explain what they've been through and how it has changed their lives forever, or being diagnosed with other trauma disorders.

And while many learn more about PTSD, Combat and Civilian, don't forget the Never Mentioned, the Trauma to those of Invasion and Occupation of their countries and what happens from those. Combat PTSD is not only suffered in the military ranks but also in those who fight the invasions and occupations of their countries, and Especially in the civilian populations of those countries!

These people Need as much Help, or more, not only in attempting to releave their suffering as well but for some how they handle what they are going through, will they lash out in retaliation, further, for what they've been forced to live through, on their own people or others, will they become radicalized beyond the extreme and create terror on others, anyone!

Think how you would feel if placed into the same hell those others are living in!

Also found at the Medill Report site is a series dedicated to the forgotten soldiers, serving their country. When we, the press, and others talk about the occupations, the fallen, the maimed, and wars, a group of this countries soldiers are rarely mention, we talk about the boys and men who serve, describing the military troops in that manner as well, rarely mentioning the Women who serve in uniform and as Honorably.

Women in our military today: an overview
by Melissa Schmitt

Women now represent 14 percent of the U.S. military, and they are playing new roles in the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Yet little is known about the long-term effects of combat on women, and some say more services are needed for the increasing amount of women veterans who are expected to use Veterans Affairs facilites.

Women Vets Get Worse Care, Review Finds

Women veterans aren't receiving the same quality of outpatient care as men at many Department of Veterans Affairs' facilities, according to an agency review obtained exclusively by The Associated Press.

The review appears to validate the complaints of advocates and some members of Congress who have said the health care system needs to focus more on women's health.

Women in todays military have many more rolls than in any previous time before, many serving in Combat Situations, chopper pilots, jet pilots, participating in combat patrols........................., they are killed, wounded, develope the same mental trauma of their male counterparts and in my thinking probably more so, for women bring life into this world after carrying that life within, than are placed into the situation of war and occupation sometimes taking life to save their own and their fellow soldiers.

Veterans call for Impeachment

Veterans For Peace presented 22,000 signatures calling for Bush impeachment to Rep. Conyers (D-MI)

Veterans For Peace (VFP) had planned a sit-in at Rep. Conyers office before he agreed to a meeting. VFP presented 22,000 signatures to Rep. Conyers, who chairs the House Judiciary Committee. Coincidentally, Congress referred the 35 articles of impeachment that Rep. Kucinich introduced on Monday to the House Judiciary Committee. Rep. Conyers has not stated any plans to move forward with impeachment.

Press Conferance This is a cut of the full

On June 11, 2008, members of the Veterans for Peace (VFP) organization held a press conference, at 1 PM, on Capitol Hill, demanding the impeachment of President George W. Bush. The event took place in room 1629 of the Longworth House Office building. Later in the day, the activists planned to meet with House Judiciary Chairman, Rep. John Conyers (D-MI), to personally deliver to him their “Petition for Impeachment” which, according to VFP’s President, Elliott Adams, contains “over 22,000 signatures.” Please check the VFP’s web site, for the result of that session and for future updates. The VFP was founded in 1985. It now has 7,000 members and 120 chapters around the country. This video contains excerpts from the press conference. A longer version of it will appear on Google later tonight.

Veterans Groups Win Round In Federal Court in Lawsuit Against VA

A federal court judge sided with two veterans advocacy groups suing the Veterans Administration Tuesday, agreeing to add to evidence an explosive email written by a VA official that suggested counselors consider diagnosing war veterans who show signs of post traumatic stress disorder with a less serious condition.

Two veterans advocacy groups, Veterans for Common Sense and Veterans United for Truth, sued the VA last year for allegedly failing to provide treatment to veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan who are suffering from PTSD.

Our Medicated/Wounded Military

Yesterday "GregMitch" posted a Diary on the same subject I'm placing up first.

But lets expand to on what our Civilian and Military leaders are doing to Our Troops and National Security in bushs, and now mccains call for More, occupations!

As the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan continue, an alarming number of active-duty troops are turning to prescription anti-depressants to cope with the stress of battle. David Martin reports:

Many Frontline Troops Turn To Meds To Cope

(CBS) As the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan continue, we're learning that a large number of troops are turning to medication to deal with the stress of battle.

Each year, between 20 and 40 soldiers are evacuated from war zones for mental problems brought on by combat, says CBS News National Security Correspondent David Martin, and many more stay in the battle with the help of medication.

A recent survey found 12 percent of soldiers in Iraq reported taking either anti-depressants or sleeping pills. That works out to about 19,000 soldiers, half of them using anti-depressants.

Paul Rieckhoff, executive director of the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, told Early Show co-anchor Harry Smith Tuesday, "This high rate of the use of anti-depressants and sleeping pills is really just a symptom of a deeper problem. We're sending folks back over and over again in a tremendously stressful environment, and it's taking its toll. The anti-depressants and sleeping pills are one way that the military and the individuals are trying to meet that threat."

The current front page, Time Magazine, report mentioned in the video

America's Medicated Army

While the headline-grabbing weapons in this war have been high-tech wonders, like unmanned drones that drop Hellfire missiles on the enemy below, troops like LeJeune are going into battle with a different kind of weapon, one so stealthy that few Americans even know of its deployment. For the first time in history, a sizable and growing number of U.S. combat troops are taking daily doses of antidepressants to calm nerves strained by repeated and lengthy tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Today we find out Much More:

Report: Unfit troops sent to war

The Army isn't following its own rules, as some GIs with "significant" physical problems were deployed, the GAO finds.

About two-thirds of the soldiers at three Army bases who had "significant" physical problems were deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan anyway, according to a U.S. Government Accountability Office survey released Tuesday.

I keep asking the question, "Why isn't bushs new son-in-law in a Military uniform, he certainly looks young enough and healthy enough to be serving in the all volunteer military and in these theaters of occupations?", I haven't gotten an answer.

Well maybe others could push for one:

Senator questions injured soldier deployments

WASHINGTON — The chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee blasted the Pentagon on Wednesday for sending a wounded Fort Carson soldier back to Iraq, questioning whether it had been done to fill depleted ranks.

Citing a Denver Post report, Sen. Carl Levin, a Michigan Democrat, asked about an Army captain's e-mail saying that Fort Carson's 3rd Brigade Combat Team had "been having issues reaching deployable strength," and that some "borderline" soldiers were sent overseas.

"Are there shortages in deployment strength that are now causing some of these decisions to be made that otherwise would not be?" Levin asked at a committee hearing.

No wonder I don't see as many cheap magnetic ribbons of support for the troops {while they Still support the bush}, not only on the younger folks vehicles but their parents as well, they can run but they can't hide, as our Military Breaks even further!

Bring Them Home NOW, And Take Complete Care Of Them When They Return, Health, Education, and Welfare!!

Tell Rep. Conyers To Meet With Veterans

Veterans for Peace members have been trying to meet with Representative John Conyers to deliver an Impeachment petition.

Wednesday, June 11, members of Veterans For Peace will be delivering 22,000 signatures demanding impeachment of President George Bush to Representative John Conyers' office. Representative Conyers, chair of the House Judiciary Committee, has refused to meet with the members of VFP for the past two months. Upon arriving at Representative Conyers' office, members from New York, North Carolina, New Jersey, Ohio and the District of Columbia have decided to conduct a sit-in until he agrees to meet with them.

In light of Congressman Dennis Kucinich putting forth 35 Articles for Impeachment and reading those Articles on the floor of the House of Representatives last night, 6-09-08,

YOU CAN HELP VFP

Call Representative Conyers (202-225-5126), ask that he meet with members of Veterans For Peace and accept the 22,000 signatures that call for the Impeachment of the President.
