Iraq's WMD's = Gravely Ill American Soldiers {Updated}

US soldiers assigned to guard a crucial part of Iraq's oil infrastructure became ill after exposure to a highly toxic chemical at the plant

They were bleeding from the nose, spitting blood.

There apparently were hundreds of American soldiers at this site that were contaminated.

And who do they and others accuse

Langford is one of nine Americans who accuse KBR, the lead contractor on the Qarmat Ali project and one of the largest defense contractors in Iraq, of knowingly exposing them to sodium dichromate, an orange, sandlike chemical that is a potentially lethal carcinogen. Specialists say even short-term exposure to the chemical can cause cancer, depress an individual's immune system, attack the liver, and cause other ailments.

And

"Hundreds of US troops, who may not even know of their exposure to sodium dichromate that could one day result in a horrible disease, cancers, and death," he said.

What is 'Sodium Dichromate':

Sodium dichromate is the same substance that poisoned residents in Hinkley, Calif., an incident made famous by the movie "Erin Brockovich" in 2000.

It's one of the extremely dangerous chemical's, potential killers, that industries world wide use, and they know the dangers of exposure to, and under responsible corporations is used with guarded caution and safety checks.

Langford and his former colleagues have said KBR supervisors initially told them the chemical was a "mild irritant". The company, however, eventually acknowledged that sodium dichromate was a potentially deadly substance and moved to clean up the site.

Of course KBR denies and says the safety of the workers and troops are of the "highest priority", what else would war profitteering, incompetent corporate officials say, after all they heed their investors not the worker, troops, or country paying them under the no-bid contracts!

And

The Pentagon has said that the troops' exposure to sodium dichloride at the Iraqi facility did not appear to pose any long-term threat.

But

In yesterday's hearing, however, Langford described for the first time how soldiers guarding the facility had the same symptoms as those who had dangerous levels of exposure to the chemical, complaints that are the foundation for the workers' lawsuit.
"The chromium of Iraq is going to be the same thing as Agent Orange of Vietnam," Langford said after the hearing. "I want something done for them."

Along with one of KBR's own

Edward Blacke, who served as KBR's health, safety, and environmental coordinator for the Qarmat Ali project, said he saw soldiers with "continuous bloody noses, spitting up of blood, coughing, irritation of the noses, eyes, throat, and lungs, shortness of breath."

And

Max Costa, chairman of the Department of Environmental Medicine at New York University, told the committee that ordinary blood and urine tests would not have detected heavy levels of sodium dichromate exposure after a few days. He said that the military would have had to conduct a highly specialized red blood cell test within four months of the exposure to determine the soldiers' risk of illness.
"Most people don't get it right," said Costa, after the hearing. "It is not an established test that medical labs normally do."

Pee in a cup, "You're alright, don't worry!"!

And as we've found out already over and over and over..........................., once again, we've gone through all this before,

But Dorgan said yesterday that the Pentagon has not done enough to monitor the health of the soldiers and ensure that KBR and other contractors are putting safety first.

And what does the esteem congress have to say

"It is almost unbelievable," the senator said during the hearing. "We know that there has been exposure of workers and soldiers to a deadly chemical, and there has been, in my judgment, lack of accountability by those who caused the exposure and lack of accountability at the Department of Defense, regrettably."

Lack of Accountibility??

No F'in S**t Einstein, what have the People been saying all along!!

I give kudo's to the present Congress, at least they are doing their jobs, the jobs that weren't done by the previous Congress. Investigating, Hearings and Oversite as these things keep coming forward, and not a whisper was heard about any of these in the Halls of the 109th Congress.

But the reason you all are there is 'Accountability', from the Top all the way Down, including your own!

Dorgan began investigating the workers' allegations of sodium dichromate exposure after The Boston Globe reported on the case in March.

ACCOUNTABILITY

Give Some Traffic To the articles. Just picked them up and they were posted in the last 20hrs. or so:

Ark. man, others blame KBR for contaminants in Iraq

An Arkansas man who worked as a contractor in Iraq says he lost his job after warning workers they were being exposed to a cancer-causing chemical there.

Ed Blacke, a former safety inspector for Houston-based contracting giant KBR, says his exposure to sodium dichromate in 2003 gave him chronic thyroid problems and early signs of cancer. He said supervisors initially ignored his warnings about contamination at the Qarmat Ali water injection plant near Basra, Iraq.

Democrats accuse KBR of knowingly exposing workers to deadly chemical at Iraqi water plant

Senate Democrats are accusing defense contractor KBR of knowingly exposing its employees and U.S. troops to a potentially deadly chemical in Iraq in its rush to get the country's oil infrastructure up and running.

Former contractors say Ind. soldiers were exposed to carcinogen

Indiana National Guardsmen who provided protection to defense contractors at a water pumping plant in Iraq were exposed to a potentially deadly chemical, two former workers at the site said Friday.

Troops copped cancer dust

"People are potentially exposed to something that may be very dangerous," says a memo detailing minutes from an August 8, 2003 meeting

These aren't just local rags here in the states, just these few are in the International Edition of the New York Time, from Australia, and google gives some 93 others under 'Sodium Dichromate'.

Dozens of white Europeans have trained in terrorist camps in Pakistan's tribal regions in recent months, U.S. intelligence sources tell ABC News, in what officials fear may be the beginnings of a new breed of al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorism.

32,000 Vets To Be Warned About Suicide-Linked Drug

ABC News/Washington Times Investigation Leads To Action

32,000 to be notified? 32,000 Veterans, how many are probably suffering from PTSD/Depression already, apparently are in this program unearthed by ABC News and the Washington Times, 32,000!

Responding to an ABC News/Washington Times investigation, the Veterans Administration plans to inform 32,000 veterans that they are using a drug linked to suicide or violent behavior.

And we already know where the administration stood on this from the previous reports:

The Bush White House had initially defended the VA's handling of the Chantix experiment.

Brought back to light in this one.

Parts of two previous posts I did on this crap:

Veterans Used To Test Suicide-Linked Drugs

An ABC News and Washington Times Investigation Reveals Vets Are Being Recruited for Government Tests on Drugs with Violent Side Effects

Mentally distressed veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan are being recruited for government tests on pharmaceutical drugs linked to suicide and other violent side effects, an investigation by ABC News and "The Washington Times" has found.

The report will air on "Good Morning America" and will also appear in "The Washington Times" on Tuesday. (click here to read "The Washington Times" coverage of "Disposable Heroes")

This Crap Has Been Going On For As Long As We've Had A Military, just search out the past history!!

In one of the human experiments, involving the anti-smoking drug Chantix, Veterans Administration doctors waited more than three months before warning veterans about the possible serious side effects, including suicide and neuropsychiatric behavior.

"Lab rat, guinea pig, disposable hero," said former US Army sniper James Elliott in describing how he felt he was betrayed by the Veterans Administration.

The original ABC News report

'Outrageous'; Meanwhile WH Slams ABC News Report
Senators Barack Obama and John Cornyn Are Calling for an Investigation Into Government Tests of Suicide-Linked Drugs on Veterans

Senators Barack Obama (D-IL) and John Cornyn (R-TX) are calling for an investigation after an ABC News/Washington Times report revealed that veterans are being recruited for government tests on suicide-linked drugs.

Yesterday I posted about this Atrocity as it was breaking on ABC, link goes to the post at my site.

"It is outrageous and unacceptable that our government would irresponsibly endanger veterans who have already sacrificed so much for our country," said Sen. Obama Tuesday morning.
Republican Senator Cornyn, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, is also calling for an investigation this afternoon and has sent a letter to the Secretary of the Veterans Administration, James B. Peake.
"I've requested that VA Secretary Peake look into the allegations and, if needed, take the immediate steps necessary to identify the responsible parties, provide appropriate care to any veterans who have undergone this testing, and ensure that any unethical practices are immediately brought to a halt," said Sen. Cornyn.

And from the Soldier in this report:

"They never told me that I was going to be suicidal, that I would cease sleeping. They never told me anything except this will help me quit smoking," Elliott told ABC News and The Washington Times.

And this is what this Incompetent Criminal Administration, sending the soldiers into these Theaters Multiple Times and using Stop Loss to shore up the Ranks, thinks about not informing these Vets as to the Side Effects of these Drugs while giving them to Veterans Already suffering from PTSD, the Trauma's of the Experiance of War!

Meanwhile the White House slammed the report. In a briefing today Deputy Press Secretary Tony Fratto called the story "irresponsible reporting" that took "the experience of this one veteran and trying to leave the impression that this was a situation for all veterans."
"And to try to imply that and, in fact, not even imply, see the words scrolled on a television screen this morning, that the VA is using our veterans as guinea pigs, I thought, was one of the most awful things I've ever had to watch on television," said Fratto.

Opps??

Will we see any change?

Funding for Iraq groups phasing out

Or will the situation that exist now stay pretty much the same?

And if change, how serious?

The process in northern Iraq could be a harbinger for how it is done by American units in other parts of the country. The decision to cut off funding has some soldiers worried that Iraq could lose some of its hard-won security gains when the groups disappear.

"Them getting rid of the ‘Sons of Iraq’ is going to be one of the biggest mistakes they’ve made," said 1st Sgt. Michael Livingston, a 1st Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment soldier who has worked extensively with the security volunteers in the Ninevah and Salah ad Din provinces.

Looks like some In-Country may have that answer!

First British Female Soldier Killed in Afghanistan

The Forgotten War

When we all talk about these occupations we only seem to use the terms that decribe the male soldier, we seem to conviently forget that there are women serving, and always have in our militaries, and they are serving in even more dangerous situations in these modern militaries, combat rolls!

Corporal Sarah Bryant from Cumbria died with three men in a blast on Tuesday, bringing the number of soldiers who have died in Afghanistan to 106.

Her husband added: "Although I am devastated beyond words at the death of my beautiful wife Sarah, I am so incredibly proud of her.

"She was an awesome soldier who died doing the job that she loved. My wife knew the risks, she was there because she wanted to be, and she wouldn't have had it any other way."

He added: "Sarah, as with all our fallen, must never be forgotten."

Corporal Bryant, Corporal Sean Robert Reeve and Paul Stout were among the victims

Peter Horrocks on why the BBC held back in naming Corporal Sarah Bryant

The family of Cpl Sean Robert Reeve, who was 28, issued a statement describing him as a "dearly loved son, brother, godparent, uncle, grandson, and friend, who was loving, loyal, honourable, selfless and gentle".

In a statement, the family of L/Cpl Larkin, who was 39, said he "was a beloved husband, father, son and brother whose tragic and untimely death will be deeply mourned by his family, friends and colleagues".

The family of Paul Stout, who was 31, described him as a "loving father and devoted husband".

"He was a wonderful son and brother and will be greatly missed by all his family and friends," their statement continued.

"Our lives will be changed forever by this loss."

This old Vet passes on his heartfelt thoughts and prayers, not only to Sarah's family and friends but also to those who died with her and all our British brothers and sisters!

It Was Top Down, Stupid (And I Shall Add 'Criminal Terrorism'!)

The Bush administration's "bad apples" theory goes sour.

When the Abu Ghraib scandal hit in the summer of 2004, two of the administration's most senior lawyers—White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales and the Defense Department's General Counsel Jim Haynes—stood before the world's media and laid out the official explanation for newly aggressive interrogation within the U.S. military: It was the result of a bottom-up request from an aggressive combatant commander at Guantanamo; it was implemented within the law and on the basis of careful legal advice; and it produced useful and important results. These new techniques had been essential in getting vital security information from men they labeled "the worst of the worst."

A veterans charity run by controversial "nonprofit entrepreneur" Roger Chapin and currently under regulatory investigation has quietly filed an amended federal tax return acknowledging for the first time its own doubts that a deal comprising half its entire charitable effort ever took place.

The new filing for 2006 by the Coalition to Salute America's Heroes Foundation of Ossining, N.Y., sought to cure a number of flaws pointed out by Forbes and the Better Business Bureau (BBB) Wise Giving Alliance, a leading charity watchdog. Among other matters, the revised return for the first time listed the board membership and full compensation that year of Chapin associate Michael V. Meyer and disclosed his ownership of a consultancy that was paid to handle the now-questioned deal.

The Remnants of War

Originally I was going to postup on a report out of Vietnam, that I received, as to 'Agent Orange', a few days back.

But War brings alot of negative results, very few positives, especially in conflicts of choice built on lies and the occupations that result, often having the invading country placing a supportive government in place as they remain the occupiers.

I'll get to the information on Agent Orange in a moment, but before that I'd like to update some other news on the Remnants of War.

PTSD

Brandon Friedman of Vote Vets and Vet Voice {who by the way posted at Vet Voice that he's in Florida, this week, "Getting Hitched", Congradulations Brandon and Alex!} put up a post at Vet Voice subject titled VA Denies Vet's Disability Claim; Cites VoteVets Membership

The VA rejected an Afghanistan veteran's disability claim for PTSD last month, citing his membership in VoteVets.org as a reason for the denial.

That Veteran is Staff Sergeant Will King who goes by the user name at Vet Voice as sandrat

Brandons post was on the 12th of June, on the 14th Sargeant Will King put up a post subject PTSD Ranch
Sargeant King, who suffers from PTSD from his experiances in Afganistan, along with his Mother apparently have been talking about:

Last year me and my mother came up with the idea of a veterans ranch. The ranch would be open to all vets, and would pay for itself.

Even before I finished reading his short post I went over to my site and quickly grabbed some information there, I had posted awhile ago.

That information pertained to Nadia McCaffrey who's son was killed in Iraq. Nadia's son Sgt Patrick R. McCaffrey Sr was killed in Iraq in June of 2004. Since his death Nadia, along Patrict's Wife and two Young Children has started the Patrick McCaffrey Foundation & Veterans Village to help Veterans of our present conflicts as Patrick helped his fellow soldiers In-Theater, as a Memorial in Patricts Memory. You can find out more about Veterans Village at the link directly above.

I replied to Will, in his post, with the information on Nadia and that he and his mother may want to contact her as they're both of the same mindset as to the needed help for the soldiers returning home from these occupations and especially Multiple Tours and Stop Loss.

Will replied back that he had talked to Nadia and:

She is trying to set up a conference for everyone who working on a veteran resort or thinking about it.

This morning, 6-16-08, on a visit to After Downing Street David Swanson had a Video up about Veterans Village:

With the video, at YouTube, was this description:

Roughly 30% of soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan suffer from post traumatic stress disorder. The U.S government is not doing enough to ensure that they get adequate care. Veteran's Village was founded by Nadia McCaffrey, mother of fallen American soldier Patcik McCaffrey, to give American vets a healing oasis so they can truly come home.

I posted a reply to David and in it I had this:

If the VA, once again, doesn't take the lead in PTSD and TBI than, once again, it's left to the private sector and more people are getting involved, Finally. But this Country needs to Help Fund These Projects in a wide veriaty of ways Including Some of the Funding!!

And by the VA I also mean this Country and All of us Citizens! The Country should have started doing Much More through our Government and in Our Names right after Vietnam when there started to be a much better understanding of PTSD, as it was given that name, a reality that happens to not only soldiers in War Theaters, and those Innocents and fighters in those theaters, but to many who live through a life changing Traumatic Experiance, especially the children!

Use the links above to find out more about Veterans Village and give Support to it and Nadia in Honor to Patrict, and as Staff Sgt. King (retired) moves forward on his project hopefully we will be able to find out more and offer our collective help as well, please keep us posted Will.

Cluster Bombs

I was going to post up some information on a WMD that this country uses Heavily in it's Wars and Occupations but you can find out more in a very good recent post by Truong Son Traveler who posted the following UXO - Still Killing After All These Years on a number of these boards.

And that they do, they're Still Killing and Maiming in Vietnam After All These Years!

And this Country, which Condemns Others and went to War against another small country on the rigged intelligence it had WMD's, Refuses To Sign On, with most of the World, To Ban These Weapons Of Mass and Long Time Destruction, as we improve, develope, stockpile, and use in Iraq and Afganistan along with a whole host of WMD's in our Arsenal, Depleted Uranium included!!

Visit the link to Truong's post to read more, and take action if requested to petition Our Government to Ban Them.

Agent Orange

The following comes from the Viet Nam News, Vietnam News Agency

Agent Orange back under public scrutiny

I planned on a more indepth post on Agent Orange using this Vietnamesse Press report, but with the above added, I'll make this much shorter with pertinant links and a few of their photo's.

A recent US Congress hearing has put the plight of victims still suffering from the devastating effects of the herbicide Agent Orange back under the public spotlight. Long Pham reports.

Vietnamese Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin (VAVA) vice chairwoman Dr Nguyen Thi Ngoc Phuong said early this week that the recent legal proceedings had made the public and the international community more aware of AO/dioxin and its continued effects.

The sorrow of war: Le Thi Mit holds her son Nguyen Van Truong, 17, in their house in Quang Tri Province’s Cam Lo District. The area was heavily sprayed with Agent Orange during the war. — VNS Photo Truong Vi

Two weeks ago, the hearing on AO/dioxin, Our Forgotten Responsibility: What Can We Do to Help Victims of Agent Orange, was convened by US congressman Eni F H Faleomavaega. Dr Phuong acted as a spokesperson for Vietnamese victims before the congressman and the Asia, Pacific and Global Environment Subcommittee of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Bitter inheritance: Nurses carry out health checks for children living at Hai Duong Province’s Social Support Centre. All the children at the centre have parents or grandparents who were exposed to Agent Orange during the American War. — VNA Photo Trong Duc

Phuong said that the hearing was just a start for longer and broader discussions of responsibility and action.
She suggested that there were two things the American government and people could do to help victims: support them in independent living and clean up remaining hazardous areas. Cleaning up the environment would stop residual chemicals from further affecting local inhabitants.

Providing support: 31-year-old Bui Thi Giang in Quang Tan Commune, Quang Xuong District, Thanh Hoa Province sits in the new wheelchair she received from VAVA’s provincial branch. — VNA Photo Duong Ngoc

Since 2004, VAVA has actively pursued legal channels for compensation from US chemical companies, which they argue had knowledge of the chemical’s effects. VAVA is taking the lawsuit to the US Supreme Court in August.

VAVA praises Agent Orange walkers

The meeting was held to mark the conclusion of the 1,700km walk.
As of April, participants in the walk, including Vietnamese and Americans, passed through more than 20 provinces and cities nationwide. In each region, they visited victims and presented gifts worth between VND500,000 (US$31.25) and VND10,000,000 ($625).

There is more to that last blockquote as well as the article, visit and read as well as other News from Vietnam.

I left Vietnam some 37plus years ago, four years later the U.S. pulled out and the above is only part of what we left behind, along with the cluster bombs and other ordinance. Not only left behind but have been refusing to compensate the people and country we destroyed, all these years, who had done nothing to deserve what we did to them!

Now we are once again in long occupations built on lies, especially Iraq!

We aren't keeping our promises as we occupy and we won't when we leave, not only promises but responsibilities!

What long term legacies of Mass Destruction will be left behind, one known is our use of Depleted Uranium in our Ordinance. Reports are all ready coming forth about deformed babies being born, that's enough for me, if not DU than it's our other numorous weapons being used from our arsenals of WMD's and Destruction!

McClatchy - "We got the wrong guys" (Updated)

McClatchy has started a series today on our 'War on Terror'.

McClatchy tracked down 66 men released from Guantanamo in the most systematic survey to date of prisoners held there. Many had no connection to terrorism, but their experience turned them against America.

For many of us, right from the beginning, this 'War on Terror' was seen as not the attempt to bring to justice those who commit 'Criminal Terror' but to increase the ranks of those labeled as 'Terrorists', while creating our own brand of Terror on others, creating a Perpetual War Fear to replace the old 'Cold War' Scare, praticing the failed policies of this countries power and wealth for more of the same, and going against All that we as a Nation are supposed to stand for, instead of a Worldwide Criminal investigation to bring justice for Criminal Terrorists Acts!

Some in the 'many of us' served and fought in the failed policies of the 'Cold War', Vietnam, the occupation of a small country over an Ideology called 'Communism', today 'Religious' Ideology is used!

The other day I posted this:

For more than six years, the United States has held hundreds of men at Guantanamo — "the worst of the worst," in the words of former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. But the truth was different. McClatchy tracked down 66 men released from Guantanamo in the most systematic survey to date of prisoners held there. Many had no connection to terrorism, but their experience turned them against America.

Watch The Opening Video of the Series

McClatchy reporters spent eight months traveling to 11 countries, interviewing 66 former U.S. military detainees about their experiences in detention systems at Guantanamo and in Afghanistan. (Video by Travis Heying)

The series begins:

Sunday: We got the wrong guys

Monday: 'I guess you can call it torture'

Tuesday: A school for Jihad

Wednesday: 'Due process is legal mumbo-jumbo'

Thursday: 'You are the king of this prison'

America's prison for terrorists often held the wrong men

By Tom Lasseter | McClatchy Newspapers
GARDEZ, Afghanistan — The militants crept up behind Mohammed Akhtiar as he squatted at the spigot to wash his hands before evening prayers at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp.

They shouted "Allahu Akbar" — God is great — as one of them hefted a metal mop squeezer into the air, slammed it into Akhtiar's head and sent thick streams of blood running down his face.

Akhtiar was among the more than 770 terrorism suspects imprisoned at the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. They are the men the Bush administration described as "the worst of the worst."

There's a whole host of back links at the report site.

Reading this first once again pushes McClatchy to the top of the heap, in my thoughts, for real journalism being brought back, though they've been there pretty much all along with their professionalism and professionals!

We've passed any line there might have been to contain the Blowback from these failed policies, long ago!

But with real people working together we all may be able to minimize that Blowback, at least some, that the younger generations will be the recipients of!

This is Our Legacy us responsible adults are leaving, not a Better World nor a Better Existance than we have, as those before us worked hard for, but an extremely dangerous world of Hatreds in far too many!

Update:

The Diane Rehm Show - NPR
Detention of Terrorism Detainees

Tuesday the Senate will hold hearings on the origins of harsh interrogation techniques and last Thursday Guantanamo prisoners won the right to challenge their detention in federal courts. We take a look at how the post 9/11 detention and interrogation system was organized and what it's achieved. A new investigative series in McClatchy newspapers concludes that abuse and mismanagement led to the radicalization of innocent people caught in the effort to round up terrorists.

Guests
Roy Gutman, foreign editor, McClatchy Newspapers; author "How We Missed the Story: Osama Bin Laden, the Taliban and the Hijacking of Afghanistan"

Col. Stuart Herrington, retired U.S. Army interrogator; reviewed detainee operations at Guantanamo and in Iraq for the U.S. Army

Matthew Waxman, former deputy assistant secretary of defense for detainee affairs (2004-2005); also held high ranking positions in the Department of State and National Security Council; currently, professor of law at Columbia University
