The VA and Soda on a Counter.....Prosecution!!

{did some editing since first posting with a few changes and some contact information to take action!}

I paided a visit over to Harpers magazine site last night, and this is what I first saw:

Unexpected Consequences from a Mug of Soda

Thought maybe it was some sort of satire but quickly found out it wasn't as I read further and followed the links.

It is written by one Scott Horton

The Bush Justice Department continuously tells us it is beleaguered, under-resourced, and having a hard time battling crime.

Scott is referring to this article in the Idaho Statesman about a woman who drives her father, a brother Vietnam Veteran, to their VA Hospital for treatments and while there usually gets a re-fill of soda in their cafeteria.

Scott lets us in on abit of the story line and adds some thoughts of his own, like this:

The VA turned the matter over to Idaho U.S. attorney, Thomas E. Moss, who prides himself on having been picked as an adviser to Alberto Gonzales. Moss literally decided to make a federal case of it by bringing a prosecution. Remember, this is the same Bush Justice Department which has advised Congress that it “lacks the resources” to investigate or prosecute more than 30 rape cases involving contractors in Iraq, and which recently decided that senior Republican appointees caught in a massive corruption, cocaine and illicit sex scandal at the Interior Department weren’t worth going after.

On December 16, 2005, U.S. Attorney General, Alberto Gonzales, appointed Mr. Moss to a three-year term on the Attorney General's Advisory Committee (AGAC), a group which makes recommendations to the Attorney General on national policies, procedures and substantive issues. Tom also continues to serve on the Attorney General's Executive Working Group, and on the AGAC's subcommittees dealing with Native American Issues, and Borders and Immigration.

In last nights post blueintheface gave some quick contact information:

Brave New Foundation: In Their Boots Webcast 12

Topic: The American Widow Project ***** We Regret to Inform You Chapter 2

Originally aired on September 17th, 2008

Nicole Hart

Ami Neiberger-Miller
Communications & Public Affairs Officer
Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS)

Taryn Davis
Last year, 22-year-old Taryn Davis' world crumbled. On May 21, 2007, Taryn was told her husband, Army Cpl. Michael W. Davis, had died from wounds sustained from an IED explosion in Iraq. She was crushed. Unable to find the peer support she needed from other recently widowed military spouses, Taryn founded the American Widow Project four months later to help her cope with the loss of the love of her life. Using the power of the internet, Taryn has been able to reach out to over 100 young military widows (the majority of which are under 30), offering them peer support and help with whatever they might need.

Nicole Hart
Nicole Hart, found her soul mate when she was 16-years-old and married him three years later. Then, this past winter she lost him. On January 8, 2008, Army Sgt. David J. Hart was killed while trying to help one of his wounded men. Nicole, now a 23-year-old widow, didn't know life could go on without David, and sometimes she still doesn't understand how the earth continues to rotate. But, with the peer support from her new friends at the American Widow Project, she's realizing that if she gets into her wedding dress on her anniversary and flips through wedding photos, she's not weird, and she's not alone.

Windy Link
Windy's husband Sgt. Joey Link died while serving in Quatar as Air Support for the war in Iraq. Not only did he leave behind his wife Windy, but he also left behind two sons, and their baby daughter, Rylee. This summer, Windy left Rylee for the first time to travel to Austin, Texas to hang out with, and lean on, her new friends with the American Widow Project.

POWs' Plea

Last night the Rachel Maddow MSNBC show had a couple of clips about a very important legislative bill that passed in the House of Representatives on monday Sept 15 '08.

The bill is H. R. 5167 which had 38 co-sponsors with only 3 being Republican.

The bill's name is: Justice for Victims of Torture and Terrorism Act

But watch a video, of which I combined two of her reports together, that will explain further.

She had another segment, with the highest ranking officer held prisoner at that time, and mentioned in the above clips, Colonel (ret) David William Eberly, which they didn't have that clip up at their site so I couldn't add it, though it was only a short interview prior to talking to the congressman.

Some past history of what has been going on with the POW's situation and the GOP Administrations blocking of:

This is a December 30, 2007 LA Times article: Defense bill’s demise stymies ex-POWs’ suit

President Bush surprised Congress by refusing to sign a Defense Department authorization bill, in part because the legislation could revive a lawsuit brought by American prisoners of war during the 1991 Persian Gulf War who say they were tortured by the Iraqis.

Their suit sought to establish the principle that war prisoners who were tortured in violation of the Geneva Convention were entitled to sue the country that tortured them.

By keeping the bill from becoming law, the president delayed pay raises for the troops and improvements in the care of wounded veterans. On Thursday, he pointed to a little-noted provision in the huge bill and said it could trigger a wave of lawsuits that might “imperil billions of dollars of Iraqi assets.”

Now an update tied to the Maddow report House gives go-ahead to sue Iraq over torture

Former POWs' and civilians who were tortured or held hostage during the 1991 Gulf War could pursue lawsuits against Iraq under legislation the House has approved.

The White House, saying the bill would threaten economic and political progress in Iraq, threatened to veto the measure if it reaches the president's desk. It still has to clear the Senate.

What could be behind the GOP Administrations actions? Let your imagination run wild, it doesn't need to run to far, believe me!

The bill limits total recovery for those held hostage to $900,000. Those tortured would be eligible to receive up to $2.5 million plus $6,000 for every day held.

Now this brings up the Very Interesting Future for this Bill, or one similar, as it goes to the Senate, and if chopped up to get the signature, how chopped up, and if there is even a way the former POWs' can get their due justice with a presidential signature or congressional votes to overcome any veto.

This is a Bill that should be watched Very Closely, Very Closely!

Will the GOP Candidate, and Vietnam POW, even attend the sessions of congress to debate and vote on it, he's missed a number of votes this year already?

If he does, how will he vote?

Will he be the 'Maverick', that everyone seems to have labeled him with, and royally blast the present administration about their stance on this, didn't hear anything before?

But lets go back abit. This 'Maverick' GOP Senator was in the Majority when 9/11 occurred. That same Majority, and the country, sided with the administration in sending our military troops to invade Afghanistan and Capture or Kill the supposed ringleaders of al Qaeda who admittedly carried out the attacks of 9/11.

That same Majority, and this 'Maverick', than joined forces with the administration in turning the attention from Afghanistan, bin Laden {still not captured or killed as are the other leaders of}, al Qaeda, to an invasion of Iraq, pulling military forces and resources for that invasion, still in Afghanistan as the past couple of months has grown more dangerous, and still in Iraq an Iraq of instability.

The same Majority, and this 'Maverick', who seemed, in their joy and rush to send our Military to Wars and Occupations rubber stamping everything the administration wanted, didn't seem to even Think about those troops and how they were to be taken care of when physically and mentally maimed, nor as to their living conditions at the military care facilities nor the bases they live on, and also, once again {we 'Nam Vets saw it all during, after, and since that debacle} being veterans of from their service to country!

I don't remember to many 'Maverick' Strong Voice Oppositions against any of this, any said were just blowing words out of mouth into air caught maybe in the archives of the places said.

Now this 'Maverick' seems to be saying everything is just 'ducky' in Iraq, after 6yrs. of occupation, even though the purpose of the 'surge' he totes as successful was to bring to Iraq a Government For All The People Of, that hasn't happened yet and things seem to be moving rapidly towards more sectarian violence not a United Iraq!

Once again, lets see what this 'Maverick' does as to this Bill, not only does but What He'll Say, that is if he even bothers taking his Senate Seat to Debate and Vote on this for the POW's Plea!!!

Overseas American Voters: Military, Civilian, and Kids Old Enough

New online tool to aid with overseas voting is launched

An online tool was launched this week that proponents say will make it easier for overseas Americans to vote if they have requested but not received their absentee ballot.

Users who log on to Overseas Vote Foundation can click on the FWAB link and be prompted for information according to the ZIP code where they are registered to vote.

The system presents the federal candidate lists for a voter’s district. Voters can mark their ballot on the computer or print it out and mark it by hand. Users are then provided the address of their home county election official where they mail their write-in ballot.

OVF and Defense Department officials recommend that overseas voters who don’t receive their ballot by Sept. 30 use the FWAB.

If you want abit more click link above.

Waiting for a ballot?
Did you register to vote and request an absentee ballot for this election? Are you still waiting for it to arrive? If so, you can use the federal write-in absentee ballot, which will let you vote in your district’s federal races. Voting officials recommend using the FWAB option if you don’t receive your ballot by Sept. 30.

To use a new automated system that will help you fill out a write-in ballot for your home county, log on to Overseas Vote Foundation.

OEF/OIF Suicide Toll and Reading Materials

I want to point you to a friends website PTSD Combat: Winning the War Within if you hadn't know about Ilona's work and research, or if you've visited but not in awhile.

And point you to her recent post OEF/OIF Veteran Suicide Toll: Nearly 15% of Overall U.S. Military Casualties Result from Suicide

I'm only going to give you a small snippet of her post, visit and read the rest, for there are a number of link backs giving one an open window in the problems that war and occupation theaters inflict on those who serve in them, as well as the people of the occupied and destroyed countries.

Back in February, the Marines released their military branch's updated suicide statistics. They revealed the number of Afghanistan and Iraq combat troops and veterans who took their own lives in 2007 had doubled over the previous year.

Earlier this month, the Army reported its own current soldier suicide data, reflecting another year of record increases. And just last week, the VA chimed in with their latest OEF/OIF veterans suicide figures -- also another record-breaker -- for its Afghanistan and Iraq veteran clients.

Gregg Zoroya of USA Today:

Visit above link to Ilona's site, there's much more than just this well researched post, much more, and the results of War, PTSD, TBI, the Maimed Physically and Mentally, must be placed up front and at the top of the list as War should be the Absolute Last Resort for any Democracy of the People to Lead by Example not by Destructive Policies creating hatreds and enemies!

Below you will find a list of great books, there are others, that should be read, understood, and referanced as to what needs to be done to help those who've been placed in these Hell's on Earth!!

First Ilona's terrific referance booklet of great information:

Moving A Nation to Care: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and America's Returning Troops

And a few more to add to the personal libraries and public libraries as well:

I Can Still Hear Their Cries, Even In My Sleep: A Journey Into PTSD

Veterans's PTSD Handbook: How to File and Collect on Claims for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

After the War Zone: A Practical Guide for Returning Troops and Their Families

War and the Soul: Healing Our Nation's Veterans from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Back from t Front: Combat Trauma, Love, and the Family

Heart of War: Soldiers' Voices From the Front Lines in Iraq

Blood Brothers: Among the Soldiers of Ward 57

As I said above, there are others in the bookstores and online book sources. To stop repeating the mistakes of destructive conflicts one, the majority that don't serve in them, must understand what conflicts do to their brothers and sisters, the few who do serve, and the damage done to any countries National Security, for the Innocents can and do become the Targets of the Blowback and Retaliation from Failed Policies!!!

Add On:

How the VA Abandons Our Vets

Sgt. Juan Jimenez had one of the most dangerous jobs in Iraq, ushering top Administration officials through the war-torn streets of Baghdad. He returned home with two Purple Hearts and shrapnel lodged in his right arm. Today he is gravely ill.

What Jimenez didn't realize is that before he could receive benefits for his wounds, he'd have to prove that those wounds came from war. Three and a half years later, the sergeant is still making his case. The Department of Veterans Affairs isn't convinced. And it won't give him his benefits until it is.

HatTip to carol

Over at ePluribus Media for this post with just this Great Pic:

Bush Shatters the Myth of White Supremacy

Iraq, Baghdad and an Army Report on a recent Killing

U.S. Troops in Iraq

US troops' anger on Iraq duty

US troops talk to Newsnight's Andrew North about not wanting to be in Iraq and how the effort is hurting the US economy and reputation.

Guardian photographer and film-maker Sean Smith spent two months with the US 101st airborne division over the summer, in the Shia strongholds of Sadr City and Shu'la, where peace still seems a long way off.

Getting to School in Iraq

09.15.2008

Iraq, Baghdad/Adhamiya - Over the last five years violence, terrorism, and fundamentalism have a severe impact on the ability of Iraq's children to receive an adequate education. This week Alive in Baghdad's Isam Rasheed speaks with parents, teachers, and children about the issues facing the Iraqi education system.

For many, simply the issue of travelling to and from school prevents them from attending their classes regularly. Roads and even schools are often closed for government military operations, or by insurgents or militias opposed to the idea of an unfettered education system.

Army report on Touma killing

Army's report finds fault with Touma's unit

Touma, who was 23, checked in at Fort Bragg on June 12 and was not expected back at the post until June 16. Police investigators believe she was killed June 13 or 14.

The military’s investigation shows that Touma should have been declared “absent without leave” on June 17, but paperwork declaring her AWOL was not started until June 22 — the day after her body was found.

No court appearance for soldier charged with murder

"Another Walter Reed-Type Scandal"

Soldiers at the military hospital languished in part due to incompatible databases and dismal record keeping. Welcome to the Pentagon's $20 billion medical-records boondoggle.

The above subject title is a report, over at Mother Jones, I couldn't think of a better title than used, really, written by Niko Karvounis who, according to the Mother Jones info at the end, is a program officer at The Century Foundation, where he researches health care, among other issues and is a regular contributor to HealthBeatBlog.org.

It's one of those "Here we go again, on the incompetence and arrogance, of those that were placed on the public payroll under this corrupt and totally incompetent administration and arrogant wanna-be top CEO, only in his dreams, and complacent GOP congress up till the previous election!".

I still can't figure out the why so few, if any, are not running against the policies, or actually the non-policies of the previous GOP controlled congresses, under which six years were under total GOP control, from the administration on down.

Even if there were complicity from the Democratic side the voting records and the Congress records are a mother load of information on an Ideological Policy that can and should not exist in a Free and Democratic Government, even covering the Economics of the Capitalism that was set forth, showing up, not just recently as in yesterday, but right along.

But this is more about what many should be bringing in to the public discussion, especially those who would be freshmen/women in the Congressional Races.

This is, once again and the list is so long, about what the previous 109th Congress didn't do, nor care about, as they were beating the drums of war, their claim to a strong national security, and they with their surrogates were calling us, who were warning them and the majority of this country what was coming, across the whole spectrum, every childish and treasonous name they could muster in their double speak of hypocrisy, lies, and propaganda!

In February 2007, William Winkenwerder Jr. announced he was stepping down from his post as assistant secretary of defense for health affairs following a press conference in which he downplayed the Walter Reed scandal as a mere "quality-of-life experience." In the months that followed, it seemed clear that Winkenwerder's negligence may have been partly to blame for the deplorable conditions at the military hospital. Now, more than a year and half after his departure, Winkenwerder's legacy lives on in a multibillion-dollar Defense Department medical-records management system that many military doctors believe is fatally flawed. One military physician, speaking anonymously, calls it "another Walter Reed-type scandal."

He goes on to explain the Armed Forces Health Longitudinal Technology Application, or AHLTA, that begin in 1997. Who got the contract for it, complaints about it etc..

The military stuck with the system until November 2005, when Winkenwerder, who oversaw all DOD health care, held a press conference rechristening the system "AHLTA." "We have put a new name on what we are doing because it is not a 'version two' of anything, but an entirely new system," he said. But AHLTA was CHCS II, warts and all—and a new name couldn't hide the program's problems.

Over the course of AHLTA's implementation period, which has continued through this year, military doctors have grown increasingly disgruntled with the system. They complain that AHLTA is difficult to use, error prone, and slow, and that it has too many nonsensical tics such as an inability to capture patient data unless the patient stays in a hospital overnight.

More about the failings but also about the success of a program that the VA had already been using for the past 25yrs. and integration problems of this new system with the old and who suffers from the many problems.

And here's the key to their failed ideology and policies:

But Winkenwerder championed the private-sector solution. Like many Bush administration appointees, Winkenwerder was plucked from industry. An MD/MBA, he never served in the military and was a vice president of Blue Cross Blue Shield, New England's largest private health insurer, before arriving at the DOD. Winkenwerder was proud of his corporate pedigree: During his nomination process, he told the Senate that "coming from the private sector, I am…confident in the ability of private health care contractors to [provide]…high quality services." (Winkenwerder did not respond to an interview request.)

Right, and we've been watching how the once World Envied Private Sector, businesses and workers, often knocking heads but moving forward with the best in modern innovations and technologies for an advanced society that this planet has experienced in a long time, has sunk to it's own corruption, greed, arrogance, self indulgence, apathy, false superiority,....................................................................., the list is just to long, but a total lack of common sense, critical thought and extremely bad business practices should be added.

It isn't about pride of innovation nor quality products it's about wealth and the road to easy money garnered off the backs of the working masses who still try and get a pride and self worth out of what they do.

The AHLTA debacle hasn't come cheap. So far the Pentagon has invested an estimated $5 billion of taxpayer money in the project. This figure includes the original Integic contract and other corporate handouts such as a $67.7 million follow-up contract for "monitoring" and "management" with Northrop Grumman—which bought out Integic shortly before AHLTA was announced—and another $12.3 million to Northrop and Booz Allen Hamilton for aid in assessing how AHLTA and VistA can share data.

We're talking about the so called false impression given of a Strong National Security by a group of, so many names and descriptive words come to mind, extremely incompetent fools, who Never seem to give a crap about anyone but those in their circles, even than turning on the ones who get caught in their web of greed and corruption, using that phrase "Strong On National Security and Defense" to only enhance their power and greed on their Use of those they send into Wars of Choice and the long running Destructive Occupations than Short Change Them when they return. These War of Choice only helping to create a Weak National Security so they can use that as their excuse for the continuation of Perpetual Conflict and Criminal Terrorism!

Niko Karvounis has more, with important backlinks, that should be read, But I'll place a couple of more cuts of thought:

But making these systems interoperable will come at enormous taxpayer expense: Casscells says the price tag for convergence will be another $15 billion over the next several years, putting the total cost of AHLTA somewhere in the realm of $20 billion—four times what the government had originally budgeted for the entire AHLTA process. "There's been plenty of blame to go around," Casscells said at a forum on military health care last month. "Nobody's gonna like it."

Privatization, ain't it great, especially when nobody complains, and those that do are marginalized on the extreme!

For his part, Winkenwerder, who boasted that the system "works" and "is improving care" in an October 2007 interview, is still touting the success of AHLTA. His profile at Deloitte Consulting, where he serves as a senior adviser, proudly claims that he oversaw "the world's…most sophisticated electronic health record system."

But that's what this society and it's modern capitalist ideology is all about, not what you know, but who you know, and how to pad your resumes with lies, but if you know the right folks, Who Cares!!!!

"Who is Sarah Palin?" - The Ed Schultz Show!

Today at High Noon Eastern Time we can hear from many of the people right in Alaska about Sarah.

As we've already found out if anyone really knew much about her, and her so called executive experience, they kept it under wraps, plenty of wraps, and than tried to sneak her by the American People who do the hiring and want the resumes!

My thoughts, with all that's come to light, they were calling her a rising political star on personality only, as John McCains daughter says, PERIOD!

Seems they do that in most they hire to government positions as well, as we've watch the total incompetence these past almost eight years, in the administration, and times before in congressional staffs as well as federal agency staffs.

Will this just be a Town Hall of Alaskans of like minds, can't say I live in North Carolina and wasn't there, but from the Video's that are online now as to the Rally, in front of the Anchorage Library, fitting, many will probably have nice things to say about their Governor, though their probably now thinking twice as to that office, but will be telling us that she isn't ready to hold the Office of The Vice Presidency.

There may also be some of her supporters in the crowd, everyone was welcomed who could fit into the venue from my understanding.

Here's abit of what the now famous blog MudFlats posted

It’s still amazing to me how the media have flocked to our fair city. One visit that I was particularly pleased with was progressive radio talk show icon Ed Schultz, bringing “Team Fargo” to the University of Anchorage for a Town Hall meeting. Sarah Palin was the topic du jour. No need to say that was there? Nobody found us particularly interesting until this whole fiasco came up. Usually we have to resort to bribing famous people with fishing trips and tales of natural splendour. And they still don’t come.

The house wasn’t packed, but there was a respectable crowd, and everyone was more than willing to give opinions on the woman who might very well be sitting in the Oval Office some day. I’m sorry. I know that felt as strange to read as it did to write…but that’s what we’re dealing with.

Bottom Line: Do Alaskans think she’s prepared? No.

Foot Note:

Joe and Jill Biden were in Charlotte last night and spoke around 6:30PM. The local FOX all News station carried the speeches live and also streamed over the net. They didn't post up the stream link until just as they spoke, but said afterwards that they'd have the video on their site to watch later. It still isn't up.

All they have there is a very short piece that was their last update a little after 8PM:

Biden stumps for Obama in Charlotte

In it they put this:

"I could walk from here to Greensboro and I wouldn't find one person who says we've made great progress economically unless I ran into John McCain on the road."

Both of them gave well received crowd pleasing speeches, and Joe touched on a number of Issue's, actually quite abit.

If they place a URL up for the Video feed I'll post it, I'll try and see if I can find another outlet but I doubt it as they were the only ones who carried it live.
