Not Surprised: Abu Nidal Apparently Also on U.S. Payroll!!!!

Report: Notorious Palestinian Mercenary Was Hired by U.S. to Find Link Between Saddam and Al-Qaeda

Iraqi papers obtained by The Independent state that Abu Nidal was "colluding" with the U.S.

Iraqi secret police believed that the notorious Palestinian assassin Abu Nidal was working for the Americans as well as Egypt and Kuwait when they interrogated him in Baghdad only months before the Anglo-American invasion of Iraq. Hitherto secret documents which are now in the hands of The Independent -- written by Saddam Hussein's brutal security services for Saddam's eyes only -- state that he had been "colluding" with the Americans and, with the help of the Egyptians and Kuwaitis, was trying to find evidence linking Saddam and al-Qa'ida.

President George Bush was to use claims of a relationship with al-Qa'ida as one of the reasons for his 2003 invasion, along with Iraq's possession of weapons of mass destruction. Western reports were to dismiss Iraq's claim that Abu Nidal committed suicide in August 2002, suggesting that Saddam's own security services murdered him when his presence became an embarrassment for them. The secret papers from Iraq suggest that he did indeed kill himself after confessing to the "treacherous crime of spying against this righteous country".

The final hours of Abu Nidal, the mercenary whose assassinations and murderous attacks in 20 countries over more than a quarter of a century killed or wounded more than 900 civilians, are revealed in the set of intelligence reports drawn up for Saddam's "presidency intelligence office" in September of 2002. The documents state that Egyptian and Kuwaiti intelligence officers had asked Abu Nidal, whose real name was Khalil al-Banna, to spy for them "with the knowledge of their American counterparts". Five days after his death, Iraq's head of intelligence, Taher Jalil Habbush, told a press conference in Baghdad that Abu Nidal had committed suicide after Iraqi agents arrived at the apartment where he was hiding in the city, but the secret reports make it clear that the notorious Palestinian had undergone a long series of interrogations prior to his violent demise. The records of these sessions were never intended to be made public and were written by Iraqi "Special Intelligence Unit M4" for Saddam. While Abu Nidal may have lied to his interrogators -- torture is not mentioned in the reports -- the documents appear to be a frank internal account of what the Iraqis believed his mission in Iraq to be. The papers name a Kuwaiti major, a member of the ruling Kuwaiti al-Sabbah family, as his "handler" and state that he was also tasked to "perform terrorist acts inside and outside Iraq". His presence in the country "would provide the Americans with the pretext that Iraq was harboring terrorist organizations," the reports say.

"Coded messages indicate that the Kuwaitis asked him indirectly to find out whether al-Qa'ida elements were present in Iraq. Our conclusions were confirmed when he [Abu Nidal] started to mitigate his actions with irrational answers when asked about the data against him. He attempted to sidetrack his answers by not being specific and referring to historical matters. It was noted by the investigators that he went from short, ambiguous and unclear replies to generalities … he seemed perturbed … But once he became convinced of the weight of the evidence against him concerning his collusion with both the American and Kuwaiti intelligence apparatuses in co-ordination with Egyptian intelligence, he realized that his treacherous crime of spying against this righteous country had been exposed …"

Abu Nidal was no stranger to Iraq. He had operated from Baghdad, Damascus and the Libyan capital of Tripoli when the regimes wanted to use him as a "gun for hire". It was Iraq which paid him to organize the attack on the Israeli ambassador to London, Shlomo Argov, in 1982, an attempted assassination which prompted Israel to accuse Yasser Arafat of responsibility and to begin its disastrous invasion of Lebanon, and Colonel Muammur Gaddafi later established a close relationship with Abu Nidal. In 1985, his crazed gunmen attacked Israeli-bound passengers at Rome and Vienna airports, killing a total of 18 people. His biographer Patrick Seale, who suggests that for some time Abu Nidal even worked for Israel's Mossad intelligence agency, has written of how, when he feared treachery in his own ranks, a suspected spy would be buried alive, fed through a tube for days and then -- if Abu Nidal's "court" deemed death appropriate -- a bullet would be fired down the tube.

His own interrogation at the hands of Saddam's secret police, will therefore appear equally appropriate punishment for so cruel a man. Among the other crimes of which he was accused in the Iraqi intelligence report was the preparation of 14 booby-trapped suitcase bombs to be used on foreigners -- Swiss and Austrian, according to the intelligence file -- in the northern Kurdish area of Iraq, at the time a U.S.-supported "safe haven", and an attempt to recruit new members for his so-called Fatah Revolutionary Council among Palestinians wounded by the Israelis in the West Bank and Gaza who were recovering in Baghdad hospitals.

There are some oddities in the report and some unanswered questions. It says, for example, that Abu Nidal originally infiltrated Iraq from Iran on a false Yemeni passport years earlier, but that this was facilitated by his own representative in Kuwait, named as Nabil Uthman. Abu Nidal was said to have communicated to Kuwait via coded messages sent through Lebanon and Dubai. The papers give his date of birth as 1939 -- he is believed to have been born in Jaffa in what was then Palestine in 1937 -- and state that he resided in Libya in 1984 but "had no links with the Libyan authorities." He is also stated to have been imprisoned by the Egyptian security services for two months. The man who is said to have provided Abu Nidal with a "safe house" in Baghdad was interrogated in 2002 alongside the Palestinian and is named as Abdulkareem Mohammed Mustapha.

Could Abu Nidal really have entered Iraq from Iran, whose own intelligence services, would surely have questioned him? Could Abu Nidal have lived in secret in the Baathist state of Iraq without Saddam's own mukhabarat finding him? And for how long was he interrogated? The documents give us no answers to these questions.

His end is, however, recorded bleakly. "Upon being asked to accompany those charged with guarding him to a more secure location to continue the interrogation procedures, he requested that he be allowed to change his clothes. On entering his bedroom, he committed suicide. Unsuccessful attempts were made to resuscitate him …" Nothing is known of the fate of Abdulkareem Mustapha, only that he was "submitted to court". But we do know where Abu Nidal now lies.

"The corpse of Sabri al-Banna", the final report concludes, "was buried on 29/8/2002 in al-Karakh's Islamic cemetery [in Baghdad]. Until a final resting place is found, a marker designates the place of burial and it was documented on video as well as on still photographs as 'M7'." No "final resting place" for this savage man appears ever to have been found.

Years of terror: A man as feared as Bin Laden

Abu Nidal, was once as feared as Osama bin Laden. His most notorious attacks included:

*1978 His "Black June" movement blamed for murdering PLO members in London, Paris, Madrid, Brussels, Kuwait and Rome.

*1982 Israeli ambassador to Britain, Shlomo Argov, shot in Mayfair, leaving him permanently paralysed.

*1984 Jordanian airliner attacked by rocket on take-off from Athens. Assassinations included the British cultural attaché in Athens and the British deputy high commissioner in Mumbai.

*1985 Egyptian airliner hijacked - six passengers murdered and 60 killed when the plane is stormed by Egyptian commandos

*1985 Gunmen massacre 18 and wound 120 in attacks on El Al ticket desks at Vienna and Rome airports, bottom left.

*1986 Machine-gun attack kills 22 in a synagogue in Istanbul; at least 20 passengers and crew are killed when Pan Am jet hijacked in Karachi, bottom right.

*1988 Nine killed and 98 wounded when gunmen attack the Greek cruise ship the City of Poros.

"A Night For Vets"

With other recent news on Veterans and still active Military Personal following this Shout Out for not only Veterans participation but for those not Sacrificing, civilian population, to get more involved with the issues, it's past your time, that face those who Serve You when serving in our Military and especially after Their Service is over!

MTV's Choose or Lose campaign have gotten together with Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America-IAVA to produce "A Night for Vets: An MTV Concert for the BRAVE", as the poster announces, tonight the 24th at 8PM. Paul Rieckhoff, of IAVA, has a post over at Huffington that gives some more information. I'll give a few snippets in a minute.

But first you might want to take a visit to one of the MTV pages and read about just one of the issues facing the returning Veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan, many with multiple tours in these theaters. Its called Veterans Fight For An Alternative Justice System That Takes Their Trauma Into Account, everyone with feet on the ground in a combat theater, War and Occupation, is changed for life, not just those who are fighting but those Occupied as well, Everyone, and not enough Still has been done to understand not only the change but the mental suffering many go through, PTSD, as those memories of those days in Theaters keep returning over and over, sometimes triggered by that around them sometimes not, but for many they have the recurring nightmares in their sleep of what they've seen or done and those nightmares can and do invaded the mind when not sleeping.

This is a video with the above MTV report:

"I would see their tattoos," he said. "Veterans are proud of their service, and a lot of them get these tattoos, so I would go up to them and ask about their service. I noticed a lot of them are doing what I call self-medicating. They come back from a combat zone, and they are not sure how to handle those feelings or what they are going through, or [how to] stop those dreams they are having. So they start using drugs or drinking alcohol real heavily. Nine times out of 10, that leads to some sort of criminal activity."

Take a quick trip over and read the rest.

Now back to Paul Rieckhoff's post at Huffington.

We worked closely with MTV on BRAVE, because there is a tremendous amount at stake for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans in this election. BRAVE includes the following calls to action:

• Properly treat veterans' mental health issues.
• Prevent homelessness among veterans.
• Give disabled veterans the benefits they have earned in a timely manner.
• Fully fund veterans' hospitals across the country.
• Compensate troops who are made to serve longer via Stop Loss.

Paul has more, including information on a CNN show he will participate in to be aired on saturday and sunday, take a quick trip over to find out more.

Here's another video about MTV's Advocacy for Veterans:

And here's some recent news about Veterans, especially our most recent:

Report says Guard provides inadequate care

Veterans For America, a veterans advocacy group based in Washington, D.C., released a report on the Alaska Army National Guard Oct. 15 that stated the Guard does not adequately care for soldiers who return from deployment. The report accuses Gov. Sarah Palin of not taking action to address this issue.

The Veterans For America writeup can be found here along with the report in PDF.

And Veterans For America, busy as always, also has this recent report: VFA Report Release: Pennsylvania’s National Guard, Under Great Strain

The citizen Soldiers of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard have borne a disproportionate share of the burden of our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Veterans for America (VFA) has found.

Between now and November 4th, it is essential that every presidential and congressional candidate and their surrogates campaigning in Pennsylvania address how they will relieve the great strain placed on the Pennsylvania National Guard.

This is that report in PDF

You'll find much more over at the Veterans For America site.

Now lets see what former Military Personal, now Veterans, and also Union Members, have to say about the upcoming Presidential Election.

More than 2 million union members and thousands of union retirees around the country have served their country in the armed forces, and through the AFL-CIO Union Veterans Council, union vets are reaching out to other union vets to talk about what’s at stake for them this election—as veterans and as workers.

Union Veterans: McCain’s Record Doesn’t Support Vets with this report from them and this video.

This next report is Extremely Troubling, as it's been report before, a number of times. Apparently because this administration and country seems to want to continue these Occupations, especially in Iraq, it seems the past reports are being Ignored and what the military was doing has been ramped up putting our soldiers and their comrades in even more danger, self danger and extreme danger while on patrols!

This was reported last night on ABC World News: Mentally Unstable Soldiers Redeployed to Iraq by Bob Woodruff, Stretched Thin, the Army Puts the Vulnerable Back on the Frontlines. If you missed this report visit the link, and try to understand what this means, for the individual soldier who already had developed PTSD and possible TBI, from explosives devices, being sent back into the theaters that have caused their mental anguish, not only sent but sent with prescription drugs to help them coop with their depression and trauma while doing the same thing that caused it in the first place. They also greatly endanger their fellow soldiers, as one put it in the report:

Two weeks before his second deployment to Iraq last September, Army Specialist Michael DeVlieger broke down.

"At first, I thought it was something that everybody experienced," DeVlieger told ABC's Bob Woodruff, "and just through time and perseverance I guess it would pass." It didn't pass.

After an 11-day hospitalization, DeVlieger was given a diagnosis of major depressive disorder, three psychiatric prescriptions -- and deployment orders.

"Eighteen hours after he got out of the hospital, he deployed to Iraq," DeVlieger's wife, Christine DeVlieger, recalled. He left for Iraq despite Pentagon policy requiring that service members establish three months of "stability without significant symptoms" before deploying.

"I was a ticking time bomb," Michael DeVlieger said.

Enough Joe the Plumber;

McClatchy carries one of the realities further in this article I just caught. The subject title above is the beginning of theirs and it finishes with this: here's to Kareem the Soldier

Khan was a 20-year-old soldier from Manahawkin, N.J., who wanted to enlist in the Army from the time he was 10. He was an all-American boy who visited Disney World after he completed his training at Fort Benning, Ga., and made his comrades in Iraq watch "Saving Private Ryan" every week.

Kareem was brought up, as most know, by Colin Powell, on Sunday on Meet The Press. When he started telling how he had seen a picture, a picture of a Mother at her sons grave stone, a gravestone that then told everyone that this was an American 'Goldstar Mother', a 'Goldstar Mother' who had lost her American Soldier Son while he served this Country, America, in it's now Volunteer Military!

This is that picture Powell first saw:

That I know many have seen, but should be shone over and over, as there are others also, because as Powell started to describe the photo you could see this always a Soldier start to choke up but caught himself and continued, and as you read his eyes he continued with true conviction of his feelings about this Country and what it stands for, or should, but has been torn apart from it's beliefs and morality!

"He was an American soldier first," said his father, Feroze Khan. "But he also looked at fighting in this war as fighting for his faith. He was fighting radicalism."

These picture's could have been replaced with many pictures, not only of the soldier but of the 'Goldstar Mother'. Pictures of African-American mothers and fallen U.S. Military sons or daughters! Pictures of Hispanic, legal and illegal, mothers and fallen U.S. Military sons or daughters! Pictures of White European decent mothers and fallen U.S. Military sons or daughters! Pictures of Other Nationalities and Immigrants from many countries around this planet mothers and fallen U.S. Military sons or daughters! Pictures of the tens of thousands of mothers and fallen U.S. Military sons and daughters of all the conflicts, right or wrong, showing all the faces of differing Nationalities, Skin Color, Different Religious Beliefs, Different Political Ideologies, Differing Life Circumstances................................................!

Khan, a child of immigrant parents from Trinidad, was 14 when the Sept. 11 attacks happened. Feroze Khan said he remembered his son watching in stunned silence: "I could tell that inside a lot of things were going through his head."

One Sunday morning, his son sent an instant message: "Hey Dad. Are you there?" Feroze Khan was out, and he saw the message when he returned.

A few hours later, his ex-wife called. Soldiers had knocked on her door in Maryland. Their only child was dead.

Different stories from all mentioned above, but with the same outcome, their son or daughter had died serving their country!

"He was an American," Powell said.

He was a Muslim serving his Country with Honor giving, as his family has, Much More than the greater majority of the Country are willing to give while some of them would slander to an extreme his Religious Beliefs!!

Chomsky on the economy

Noam Chomsky: Current crisis demonstrates anti-democratic nature of financial system

October 21, 2008

In part two of their interview, Paul Jay asks Prof. Noam Chomsky to weigh-in on the dominant subject of the day, the economic crisis. While Prof. Chomsky agrees that the current crisis is a very serious one that will have broad implications for the broader society, he points out that the foreseeable Medicare-induced economic crisis will "dwarf" the current one in magnitude. Furthermore, Prof. Chomsky develops his contention that democracy is hindered by unrestrained free markets. While on the other hand, state-restricted markets are democratic by design in that they allow people take control--through their government--of financial institutions to force them to include externalities and risks to the broader population in their decision-making. These factors are such that profit-seeking enterprises will not accommodate them when left to their own volition, given that free markets do not put a price on these externalities.

Michelle Obama - Military Spouses

In her campaign travels Michelle has been meeting with the Spouses of our Military Personal, holding round table discussions on what their experiances are and giving a window into one of her causes if Barack is Elected and she becomes the First Lady.

CBS has a couple of video's of a recent interview done with Michelle, touching on a number of issues of who she is and what she does, there's also a report that accompanies.

Every few weeks, Obama meets with military spouses in swing states, where she presents herself as a kindred spirit and Barack Obama as the best choice for their families. She attended the two debates with military family members. And at the Democratic National Convention, she led a day of service on behalf of Blue Star Families for Obama, a two-month old group with the tagline: “Pro-Military, Pro-Obama.”

The spouses of service members captured her attention during a roundtable with working mothers, and she later hosted her first military-focused event in Fayetteville in May, a day before the North Carolina primary.

She will hold her seventh military spouses meeting Tuesday in Pensacola, Fla., following similar events in recent months in states heavily impacted by deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, including Virginia, New Mexico and Pennsylvania.

At each roundtable, she sits on stage with several spouses, delivers prepared remarks and opens a discussion. The roundtables draws local media coverage, and she answers questions about her involvement when asked by national reporters, as she did during an interview with CNN at the Democratic convention.

“Mostly I am here to listen and to do a lot of learning and then to transfer that information into the heart and mind of my husband as he moves forth,” Michelle Obama said in Norfolk, Va., in August. “The commander in chief doesn’t just need to know how to lead the military, he needs to understand what war does to military families.”

Her work in this area offers a hint at what could dominate her time in the White House.

“If she becomes first lady, this will be her cause,” said Amanda McBreen, 47, a Marine wife who participated in the Norfolk roundtable and helps coordinate 24 state chapters of Blue Star Families for Obama.

In recents stop in Charlotte and Greensboro NC she held a couple of those round tables discussions, Michelle Obama makes stops in N.C., a video news report of the one in Charlotte and the one in Greensboro NC

The CBS report mentions an interview she also recently did with U.S. News & World Report.

I Would Work to Help Working Families and Military Families

"Mom," Malia, our 10-year-old, said. "We have something important to tell you. We need to have a sleepover!"

That snapped me out of speech mode, with the bright lights and applause, and back into the role I love: Mom. The next night, 15 giggling girls—my daughters, the Biden granddaughters, and friends—took over our hotel room.

If Barack is elected president, I would be honored to be first lady. I would work daily on the issues closest to my heart: helping working women and families, particularly military families. But as my girls reminded me in Denver, even as first lady, my No. 1 job would still be Mom. At 7 and 10, our daughters are young. If we move to Washington, my first priority will be to ensure they stay grounded and healthy, with normal childhoods—including homework, chores, dance, and soccer.

We've talked to mothers whose salaries can't cover the cost of groceries—but if they take a second job, they can't afford the additional cost of child care. More than 22 million working women don't have paid sick days. Millions of women are doing the same jobs as men—but they're earning less.

It's even harder for military spouses. Their husbands and wives are away serving our nation for months at a time. So they have to be Mom and Dad. They're working, checking in on their in-laws, helping with homework, and doling out discipline—and every night, they're praying with all their hearts for their loved ones' safe return. These families aren't asking the government to fix their problems. They're asking for it to understand what's happening to their families and to find real ways to help.

Here's the CBS News interview video's.

Part 1

Part 2

And occasionally, when our daughters insist, we'll host sleepovers, too.

Afghanistan:

Fighting In A "Hornet's Nest"

There is a reason the base 60 Minutes and correspondent Lara Logan traveled to is called "Wilderness." It's in the middle of nowhere, with nothing but desolate mountains stretching endlessly into the distance, until you drop onto a tiny patch of ground not much bigger than a football field in the heart of enemy territory.

"I thought it was gonna be a little bit quieter here. But we landed in a hornet's nest when we got here," explains Staff Sgt. Jake Schlereth.

When Schlereth, 27, and 33-year-old Sgt. First Class Anthony Barnes were sent to Afghanistan, they thought the fight was mostly over.

When he arrived in Afghanistan, Sgt. Schlereth didn't think he'd be landing in a hornet's nest. "I guess I really didn't know what to expect when I got here. I'd never been here before, I'd only been to Iraq. And you didn't hear too much about Afghanistan on the news. It was all about Iraq."

"Iraq, yeah. … Roles are reversed," Sgt. Barnes comments.

"Yeah. Reversed. And now it's all about here," Schlereth agrees.

It's all about "here" because the fight in Afghanistan is worse than ever. The tiny base has been hit by rockets and mortars at least 30 times since these soldiers arrived in March.

And that's only part of it: Barnes, Schlereth and their fellow soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division have survived 20 ambushes on their patrols.

Brave New Foundation: In Their Boots Webcast 16

Topic: Traumatic Brain Injury, When He Came Home Chapter 1

A marriage is put in crisis when a Marine returns home from Iraq with Post Traumatic Stress and Traumatic Brain Injury.

Natasha Massimino
Marine Wife

Dr. Judith Broder
Director
The Soldiers Project

Aired: October 15th, 2008

Natasha Massimino
Natasha is the wife of Marine Sgt. Richard Massimino and the mother of three kids - Anastasia, Isabella and Devlin. The 30-year-old California native stood strongly by her husband when he was deployed first to Kuwait, and then twice to Iraq. But ever since he came back suffering from severe Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Natasha's life, and their marriage, have been flipped upside down. Now, not only is she a wife and a mother, but she's also a caretaker. While she always wanted to be lifelong Marine wife, now, with an average of four hours of sleep a night, all she wants is a nap. Despite the daily struggles, she's determined to help her husband work through his issues and to get the old Richard back.

Sgt. Richard Massimino
Sgt. Richard Massimino joined the Marines in 1997 and served with the 1st Maintenance Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group out of Camp Pendleton. He loved the service and always wanted to dedicate his life to it. "Richard wanted to be a crusty old Marine," says his wife Natasha. "He wanted to be there until they said you have to get out, you're too old." The 30-year-old Marine served 11 years and did a tour in Kuwait and two tours in Iraq before he was medically retired in 2008. Richard returned home from Iraq damaged - his back was a mess, he had acute asthma from his days in the desert, and he suffered from severe PTSD and TBI. He had changed dramatically, and to his wife and children he was a different person.

If Iraq Is Not Another Vietnam,

Why Do I Find Myself Rereading Dispatches?

“What They Understood And Their Leaders Refused To Acknowledge Was That Battles And ‘Victories’ Didn’t Add Up To Anything. The Number Of Communist Dead Meant Nothing, Changed Nothing”

“There Is A Point Of View That Says That The United States Got Involved In The Vietnam War, Commitments And Interests Aside, Simply Because We Thought It Would Be Easy”

Dispatches

Michael Herr, who wrote about the Vietnam War for Esquire magazine, gathered his years of notes from his front-line reporting and turned them into what many people consider the best account of the war to date, when published in 1977. He captured the feel of the war and how it differed from any theater of combat ever fought, as well as the flavor of the time and the essence of the people who were there. Since Dispatches was published, other excellent books have appeared on the war--may we suggest The Things They Carried, The Sorrow of War, We Were Soldiers Once...and Young: Ia Drang - the Battle That Changed the War in Vietnam--but Herr's book was the first to hit the target head-on and remains a classic.
