October Surprises.......

Pepe Escobar Commentary: Al Gore campaigns for Obama in Florida; Bin Laden still not heard from

For months there has been relentless talk of an October surprise capable of swaying the US presidential election - just as the Osama bin Laden video "Message to the American people" released in late October 2004. Possible October surprises include former Secretary of State Colin Powell endorsing Senator Barack Obama and former vice-president Al Gore campaigning for Obama in Florida - the state that cost him the election in 2000. Meanwhile, al-Qaeda has vaguely endorsed Senator John McCain. But many - including top US government officials - are still waiting for an Osama bin Laden video.

Inmates train pups for Veterans & Disabled

Support our troops, help people with disabilities, and save dogs.

SNIP:

I was driving to work the other day and had the radio tuned to my favorite public station WAMC Northeast Public Radio and heard a Roundtable program about inmates training pups and shelter dogs for disabled vets and other people with disabilities.

The Program is run by NEADS. You can listen to it here:

Feature about NEADS Paul Tuthill

A statement at the end of the program hit me hard:

"It can cost up to $20,000 to buy and train a dog. President Bush in 2001 signed a law authorizing the Veterans Administration to pay for programs such as Canines for Combat Veterans, but the VA continues to "study the reliability of service dogs" and has not provided any funding. NEADS pays for the program from private sources."

Angered by that report, I decided to find out more. As more and more wounded vets come home, these are the kinds of programs that are needed to support our vets.

Washington D.C., October 31, 2008 - In an opinion issued today in a case brought by the National Security Archive, the American Civil Liberties Union and the Electronic Privacy Information Center, the United States District Court for the District of the Columbia ordered the Department of Justice to submit several legal opinions issued by the Department of Justice Office of Legal Counsel for in camera review. The court explained that the “[Department of Justice] has now had two opportunities to provide this court with sufficiently detailed affidavits to describe why the documents at issue are subject to the claimed exemptions, and why many documents must be withheld in full.” Finding the Justice Department explanations insufficient, the court is now ordering the records submitted for the court’s review. Veterans Day: New PTSD Brochure

'Transmission of Trauma' Can Span Generations

ARLINGTON, Va., Oct. 29 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- For Veterans Day, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) has released a new 14-page brochure on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), treatment and recovery.

It is available on line at NAMI.org and is intended to help individuals experiencing symptoms or diagnosed with the illness, along with their families and caregivers.

"PTSD affects individuals and families," said NAMI medical director Ken Duckworth, M.D. "Traumatic events produce biological responses that affect the mind, brain, and body. Those changes involve everyone."

"Over a lifetime, approximately 5 percent of men and 10 percent of women are diagnosed with PTSD," Duckworth said. "Risk factors include the type of trauma, degree of exposure and any prior history of trauma. In most cases, there is a direct physical impact. Proximity in witnessing violent, life-threatening events also makes a difference."

An estimated 14 percent of American soldiers returning from Afghanistan and Iraq will experience PTSD. Symptoms include poor concentration, sleeplessness, nightmares, flashbacks, heightened fear, anxiety and disassociation (feeling "unreal" or cut off from emotions).

But PTSD is not limited to military veterans.

Natural disasters and sexual assault, including child abuse, are other examples of traumatic events that can cause PTSD. Following Hurricane Katrina, many children in Gulf Coast communities experienced the same kinds of symptoms as soldiers who fought in war.

Family members often are distressed to find loved ones "different" following a traumatic experience. Many feel overwhelmed and experience "caregiver burnout." Others, especially children, may find themselves developing similar fears or symptoms, in what sometimes has been called the "transmission of trauma" across generations.

Treatment may involve a combination of medication and therapy, including group therapy.

"Support systems are critical to healing," Duckworth said.

The NAMI brochure includes the following sections:

* Psychological Trauma & PTSD
* Risk Factors for Developing PTSD
* The Neurobiology of PTSD
* What is PTSD?
* PTSD & Co-Occurring Disorders
* Combat Veterans & Trauma
* Children & Trauma
* Trauma & the Mental Health System
* Family Impact of PTSD
* Recovery and Coping
* Treatment for PTSD
* Medications
* Resources, including Family-to-Family Education and NAMI Connection programs.

NAMI is the nation's largest grassroots organization dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and families affected by serious mental illnesses.

Is This The Dole God??

On a visit over to VetVoice in an open thread there was a reply with this link that you should visit, which had this photo:

We are going to intercede at the site of the statue of the bull on Wall Street to ask God to begin a shift from the bull and bear markets to what we feel will be the 'Lion's Market,' or God's control over the economic systems. While we do not have the full revelation of all this will entail, we do know that without intercession, economies will crumble.

I say above you should visit because this blogger adds this:

Just a clue: there's this book called "the bible" that these people claim to follow, but I suspect they've never actually read it, or they might have seen Exodus 32.

And than some of the Bible Verses that might refresh some minds, certainly not these folks, they threw out what they didn't like long ago, same with their preachers.

Thing is the blogger uses 'Charlton Heston' in the subject title, I would think 'Jim Jones' would fit better.

Now looking at the post time and date apparently this happened on the 29th, just the other day, wonder why I didn't see this Outpouring of these Faithful? on the News, hmmmm.

I followed a link in the above bloggers post and that led me to another blog post, with even more photo's.

yesterday of a bunch of Christian nuts praying over a false bronze idol, the Wall Street Bull (or Bowling Green Bull for you dandies out there), asking God to nationalize the economy under the state of heaven

And 'surprise' a Video of the Prayer Vigil:

Jesus People Sing to False Idol to Save God's Economy

People the rapid evolution of the Human has rather quickly been sped up, Backward, I'm afraid and does anyone, religious or not, think that God Blesses This Country and defiantly not Any Other, just look around you!

This may bring back a memory for some:

Again I ask, "Liddy Dole is this the God you're so upset that you accuse Kay Hagan of not worshiping?", for we here in North Carolina, where the folks you represent live, haven't seen you much since getting hired. Nor have we witnessed much of what you claim you've done for the state. And I certainly don't get much in response, almost zip, to anything I send you, and it seems you're training our jr senator as well in that art, hardly get a thing from him neither.

What were your intentions when asking for the job? Were they to go to Washington and join the ranks of your religious?? breathern worshiping the 'Golden Bull' of Wall Street as these faithful? christian? believers? are doing?

Just askin!!

Oh and before I sign off, could you do us all a big favor?

Could you ask Sarah, you know the one picked to run for the Vice President position, under the political party you all claim to believe in also, if she worships the God of the Bible or the Golden Wall Street Bull as well!

From the reports about her and her church it does leave a growing question mark, especially with all the recent reports of her spending habits, spending not her money but the people's money, those she's hired to represent!

Topic: Employment After Service Beyond Basic Training Chapter 1

Originally aired on October 29th, 2008

Beyond Basic Training
After being medically retired from the Army, Iraq veteran Kevin Randolph and his family are without options. They move to a transitional housing facility, and Kevin must enter one of the worst job markets in recent history to support his wife and their new baby.

Elise Randolph
Army Wife

Gracie Broll
Director
Operation Homefront Village

Kevin Randolph
Army Specialist (Ret.) Kevin Randolph joined the service straight out of high school. In 2003, he started in the Air Force and in 2005 switched to Army. He deployed to Iraq out of Fort Drum, New York in 2006. Six months into his deployment Kevin was hit with an IED, which broke his fibulae, tore his meniscus and did a lot of irreparable damage to his knee and leg. Since returning stateside, the 23-year-old vet received a disability discharge and was forced to move his family off of base, and move back into the civilian world with no job and only $1,000 per month from the Army. Like many vets, Kevin has struggled with reintegrating. Now, he and his wife Elise and their new baby Zeppelin live in a transitional housing facility in San Antonio, while Kevin awaits his VA benefits and looks for employment in an unraveling job market.

Elise Randolph
Elise met Kevin shortly after he returned from Iraq, and it wasn't long before they were married and had baby Zeppelin on the way. Without any other options, the young family moved into Operation Homefront Village in San Antonio, where they currently reside. There, Elise is able to get financial help with buying diapers and other baby needs, while Kevin tries to find a job. Now the stakes are higher. Elise recently found out she's pregnant again, which means she'll have two babies to care for with an unclear financial future. Once Kevin gets his VA benefits, they have to leave Operation Homefront, whether Kevin has a job or not.

Iraq: The Trillion Dollars - Wasted on Death, Destruction, Creation of Enemies!

What We Could Have Spent The Iraq War Funding On

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — When the Sunday morning political pundits began talking last year about the tab for the war in Iraq hitting $1 trillion, Rob Simpson sprang from his sofa in indignation.

"Why aren't people outraged about this? Why aren't we hearing about it?" Simpson said. And then it came to him: "Nobody knows what a trillion dollars is."

The amount _ $1,000,000,000,000 _ was just too big to comprehend.

So Simpson, 51, decided to embark "on an unusual but intriguing research project" to put the dollars and cents of the war into perspective. He hired some assistants and spent 12 months immersed in economic data and crunching numbers.

The result: a slim but heavily annotated paperback released, "What We Could Have Done With the Money: 50 Ways to Spend the Trillion Dollars We've Spent on Iraq."

Simpson is no geopolitical, macro-economic, inside-the-Beltway expert. He's an armchair analyst and creative director for an advertising agency, a former radio announcer and music critic in Ontario and a one-time voiceover actor.

His alternative spending choices reflect his curiosity and wit.

He calculates $1 trillion could pave the entire U.S. interstate highway system with gold _ 23.5-karat gold leaf. It could buy every person on the planet an iPod. It could give every high school student in the United States a free college education. It could pay off every American's credit card. It could buy a Buick for every senior citizen still driving in the United States.

Many Don't Like Ralph, but..........

Ralph Nader {center}

October 27, 1969
Ralph Nader set up a consumer organization with young lawyers and researchers {often called "Nader's Raiders"} who produced systematic exposés of industrial hazards, pollution, unsafe products, and governmental neglect of consumer safety laws.

Nader is widely recognized as the founder of the consumer rights movement. He played a key role in the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the Freedom of Information Act, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

We could use another Nader to come forward from the ranks of the young and listen closely to what the real Ralph has to say, not be blinded by your political ideology leading a hatred and ignorance of the man's knowledge of what goes on in Washington and the Corporate Headquarters of America!

Nader's Raiders

In the 1960s and 1970s, a number of dedicated young activists rallied to the side of Ralph Nader, committed to working towards causes such as consumer advocacy. Dubbed “Nader’s Raiders” by the press, these volunteers, student interns and staff members investigated federal bureaucracies; shaped the modern consumer activist movement; and called for protecting the environment, workers rights and limited corporate power. They researched and prepared reports that helped spur legislative change.

Former Nader's Raiders talk about what life was like working with Ralph Nader during the consumer movement.

Ralph knows, and those who still hold great respect for him also know, he isn't ever going to be elected to run the country, I don't even think he really wants to, but he does want to Educate and will take the Scandalous name calling and Hatreds raised in trying to do exactly that. That's what he's been doing since he first came forward and went up against the Powers that be and those that wanna-be.

He's also better being on the outside slamming the insiders than joining their ranks and having his voice and knowledge controlled.

While consumer advocate/environmentalist Ralph Nader has virtually no chance of winning the White House, he has been taken quite seriously on the campaign trail.

Another day in History, any takers amounst you to continue the legacy and fight for your fellow citizens!!

"Spreading The Wealth"!! That's How This Country Grew!!!!

I was born in '48 and grew up in the time after WWII and the rapid growth of not only a Great Economic Expansion but the Envy of the World to the American Worker and our Products and Services. We had the power and wealth hungry who tried to suppress but we also had intelligent business minds and workers willing to fight that brought about growing wages, safety in the work place, respect for the worker, and so much more, which gave respect and expansion to not only the employer but the companies, The company owners, the executives, the worker, and for those public companies shareholders were all reaping the rewards of that wealth sharing, that's what built the strong and ever expanding middle class and helped some break out of that and join the upper crust of the wealthy. It was the Only Successful way a true capitalist society that can achieve and expand further. Decent expanding wages for a workers hard work and company dedication gives them the ability to purchase goods and services which in turn gives growth and prosperity to other companies and workers.

This is what this writer is pointing out, as others do

Actually, it has been part of the American economic system since its founding

What is the present day GOP trying to sell everyone with statements like this: "You can spread butter on toast, we can share the love, but we are not going to share the wealth," said the Republican gubernatorial candidate. And why are so many buying this crap?

The PBS Newshour did a series of reports this past week, 10-20 to 10-24-08, on an important subject that really needs to not just be discussed, we've been doing that for years, but needs immediate implementation, meaning it should have started many yesterdays ago, many. In this series, on the first day, Ray Suarez made this statement:

"In the first half of the last century, Americans went on an infrastructure-building spree, and we've made good use of the things that were built, but we've been reluctant to pay to replace and repair thousands of miles of bridges, tunnels, roads, instead choosing to cross our fingers and rely on the good work of our parents, grandparents, even great-grandparents."

My highlight but think about what those that came before built for us, I do, as I watch our economy get rid of the businesses that built replacing with lower wage jobs of service, even the growth jobs in the 90's are now fetching less at start and stagnant wages after.

In waiting for each days report I happened on an interview with one I economist I admire, why because when he spoke he knew what he was talking about and spoke it in terms that most could understand. That was Paul Volcker and he said this in the interview:

"It seems to me what our nation needs is more civil engineers and electrical engineers and fewer financial engineers"

You can find writeup on the interview here at a site I happened on called BloggingStocks, which led me to the Charlie Rose interview with Volcker which I will place the links and interview video below.

But this is the NewsHour series that I think is a must see, and stop talking about, but do not only because it's past time for the need but because of the jobs it will create and with decent wages will spin off even more jobs and much needed growth. Each of these are covering different infrastructure needs, and after watching this first one I wish they would have covered other subjects but when it comes to infrastructure the list is very long and growing, not just repair but new.

This series was done in conjunction with others and they have a site set up called Blueprint America covering their subject material and added material.

Part 1 Aging Bridges Among Country's Infrastructure Woes

As the economic crisis continues, a similar crisis looms in the country's aging infrastructure. In the first of a series of reports, Ray Suarez takes a look at Pennsylvania's bridge problem and how it may impact future economic recovery efforts.

You can find the transcript here.

I live in the south now and because it isn't as cold here, and probably also because of the clay soil, they don't bury their water or drain pipes very deep. Well apparently we've long crossed the line of replacing lines, it seems to happen on an almost weekly basis, on bright sun shiny days and warm nights, they have a water main break, some creating huge damage and taking days to repair, most creating traffic tie ups which waste time and fuel.

Over the years all we've heard is talk after talk after talk........about things like Infrastructure, alternet energy sources, better vehicles that get huge amounts of millage per gallon of gasoline {on that one what do we have but vehicles with ever expanding toys that drivers shouldn't be playing with but still getting single to teen miles per gallon}, there's a long list of talk, and that's all we've been doing Talking!

Part 2 Increased Decay Strains Budget-strapped New Orleans Port

Even before Hurricane Katrina, the structural flaws of the port of New Orleans, combined with increased shipping volume, strained the infrastructure resource. Ray Suarez examines the port's struggle to fund improvements and keep up with its competition.

You can find the transcript here

Look around your communities and listen to the reports, I know there are problems that are just being, and have been, patch work projects, Major upgrades and improvements are way past due and patching only creates more wasted time and monies.

Speaking of just talking, in the report above they mention the Panama Canal. I was stationed there prior to Vietnam, from '68-'70, and they were talking than about needed expansion and or another canal.

Part 3 Population Growth Burdens Roads, Schools and State Programs

Amid explosive population growth, Arizona tackles the traditional problems of urban sprawl as it tries to create a new model for livable communities. Ray Suarez reports on the Valley of the Sun's transition in the face of growing infrastructure demands.

You can find the transcript here

Part 4 Chicago Airport Faces Serious Growing Pains

Ray Suarez examines Chicago O'Hare Airport's battle to increase its capacity and problems with the entire air traffic system.

You can find the transcript here

They don't have the report from friday up on the site yet, not even the transcript, there was a companion report talking to experts that is up but I'll try and continue this post with another adding in what I was originally going to write for this one. But here's the Charlie Rose interview with Paul Volcker which according to the site took place on 10/09/2008.

Once again:

"It seems to me what our nation needs is more civil engineers and electrical engineers and fewer financial engineers," Volcker said.

There's alot of talk about 'Communism', 'Socialism', and 'Marxism' coming from the Presidential Campaign of one who is married to a very wealthy woman, inherited wealth, and according to reports his choice of a running mate isn't doing to shabby neither, but still that campaign figured it could use their donated monies to purchase some extremely expensive duds for the lady.

The question is why this talk, apparently to further spin the meanings of those words as their talking heads, the rush, and the off shoots of his and now fox having been trying for years to do, if you read the definitions they point to the rovian, and others, goal, a One Party, weak representation, Single Person Leader, short of dictatorship or dictatorship, U.S. Government!!

com.mu.nism
Show Spelled Pronunciation [kom-yuh-niz-uhm] Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun
1. a theory or system of social organization based on the holding of all property in common, actual ownership being ascribed to the community as a whole or to the state.
2. (often initial capital letter) a system of social organization in which all economic and social activity is controlled by a totalitarian state dominated by a single and self-perpetuating political party.
3. (initial capital letter) the principles and practices of the Communist party.
4. communalism.
Origin:
1835–45; < F communisme. See common, -ism

But the most eye-opening of them all came, it would appear, when the Alaska Governor somehow drew a connection between Barack Obama's tax policy and an encroaching, nightmarish, communist government. Which is exactly what they themselves are trying to achieve, reason for the Double Speak about taxes, not wanting the middle class to receive any cuts and making sure they don't pay their fair share! And the thing is regular folks are falling right into their propaganda and actually arguing for them, against themselves, again!

so.cial.ism

–noun
1. a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole.
2. procedure or practice in accordance with this theory.

Compare utopian socialism.

Origin:
1830–40; social + -ism

To McCain supporters, it's his way or socialism

Not wanting to make what they deserve from their hard physical and mental work, dedication to well I don't see much of that, do see workers giving only up to what the employer is willing to give them or not caring much at all, doing just enough to pass till payday.

Marx.ism
Show Spelled Pronunciation [mahrk-siz-uhm] Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun
the system of economic and political thought developed by Karl Marx, along with Friedrich Engels, esp. the doctrine that the state throughout history has been a device for the exploitation of the masses by a dominant class, that class struggle has been the main agency of historical change, and that the capitalist system, containing from the first the seeds of its own decay, will inevitably, after the period of the dictatorship of the proletariat, be superseded by a socialist order and a classless society.

Alot of folks are looking back on what Marx and Engels were sellin and thinking hey they might have had something their, but like the so called 'conservatives' have done to the word 'liberal', many who denigrate haven't a clue what it means let alone even know 'conservative', have turned that word description into a dirty word, or they've tried while destroying 'conservative' and 'republican'.

And what are their wants:

fas.cism

Natasha Massimino
Natasha is the wife of Marine Sgt. Richard Massimino and the mother of three kids - Anastasia, Isabella and Devlin. The 30-year-old California native stood strongly by her husband when he was deployed first to Kuwait, and then twice to Iraq. But ever since he came back suffering from severe Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Natasha's life, and their marriage, have been flipped upside down. Now, not only is she a wife and a mother, but she's also a caretaker. While she always wanted to be lifelong Marine wife, now, with an average of four hours of sleep a night, all she wants is a nap. Despite the daily struggles, she's determined to help her husband work through his issues and to get the old Richard back.

Sgt. Richard Massimino
Sgt. Richard Massimino joined the Marines in 1997 and served with the 1st Maintenance Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group out of Camp Pendleton. He loved the service and always wanted to dedicate his life to it. "Richard wanted to be a crusty old Marine," says his wife Natasha. "He wanted to be there until they said you have to get out, you're too old." The 30-year-old Marine served 11 years and did a tour in Kuwait and two tours in Iraq before he was medically retired in 2008. Richard returned home from Iraq damaged - his back was a mess, he had acute asthma from his days in the desert, and he suffered from severe PTSD and TBI. He had changed dramatically, and to his wife and children he was a different person.
