Money and Health Reform

‘The Cause of My Life’
Inside the fight for universal health care.

By Edward M. Kennedy | NEWSWEEK

In 1964, I was flying with several companions to the Massachusetts Democratic Convention when our small plane crashed and burned short of the runway. My friend and colleague in the Senate, Birch Bayh, risked his life to pull me from the wreckage. Our pilot, Edwin Zimny, and my administrative assistant, Ed Moss, didn't survive. With crushed vertebrae, broken ribs, and a collapsed lung, I spent months in New England Baptist Hospital in Boston. To prevent paralysis, I was strapped into a special bed that immobilizes a patient between two canvas slings. Nurses would regularly turn me over so my lungs didn't fill with fluid. I knew the care was expensive, but I didn't have to worry about that. I needed the care and I got it..........

Ignoring criticism - namely from Senator Majority Leader Harry Reid - that intra-party targeting was ineffective, Barack Obama's campaign arm is expanding its health care ad buy into the districts of key conservative House Democrats........

Bill Moyers Journal: Money and Health Reform
BILL MOYERS: This week, Regina Benjamin was nominated by President Obama to be our next surgeon general, charged with keeping the American public informed about our health. She's a member of the Board of Trustees of the American Medical Association and recipient of a MacArthur Foundation 'Genius Grant.'....

What is it with the wealthy, and the politicians that support them, Both Parties, that they don't get the point, on pure economics, of a healthy society, workforce and those born to grow into, that they would reap much more in steady wealth that a universal health care system would cost, and those cost shared would even go down.

Not only a healthy society physically but mentally as well, as one of the biggest worries of people is their health and if they can produce to be able to enjoy their fruits of their labor and keep producing, taking the extreme worry off the table.

Their health and welfare and their families, especially the children!

Lessons of Vietnam

Applicable to Today

It was half a century ago, on the night of July 8, 1959, that the first two American soldiers to die in the Vietnam War were slain when guerrillas surrounded and shot up a small mess hall where half a dozen advisers were watching a movie after dinner.

MSgt. Chester Ovnand, of Copperas Cove, Texas, and Maj. Dale Buis, of Imperial Beach, Calif., would become the first two names chiseled on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial — the first of 58,261 Americans who died in Vietnam during the next 16 years.

The deaths of Ovnand and Buis went largely unnoticed at the time, simply a small beginning of what would become a huge national tragedy.

Presidents from Harry Truman to Dwight Eisenhower to John F. Kennedy to Lyndon B. Johnson to Richard M. Nixon to Gerald R. Ford made decisions — some small and incremental, some large and disastrous — in building us so costly and tragic a war...........

"We Are Soldiers Still: A Journey Back to the Battlefields of Vietnam." is the sequel to Joe Galloway's and Gen. Hal Moore's bestseller "We Were Soldiers Once ... and Young."

Moving Tribute and a Primer on Leadership

"We Are Soldiers Still: A Journey Back to the Battlefields of Vietnam". Lt. Gen. Harold G. Moore, USA Ret., and Joseph L. Galloway. HarperCollins Publishers. 272 pages; maps; photographs; index; $24.95.

By Col. Cole C. Kingseed
U.S. Army retired

Literary sequels seldom live up to their advance billing and reader expectation, but We Are Soldiers Still by Lt. Gen. Harold (Hal) Moore, U.S. Army retired, and Joe Galloway is a notable exception. In writing a sequel to their New York Times best seller, We Were Soldiers Once … and Young, the authors address a new generation of warriors because “there is no such thing as closure for soldiers who have survived a war.” For Moore and Galloway, the survivors have “an obligation, a sacred duty, to remember those who fell in battle beside them and to bear witness to the insanity that is war.”......

Segregation: Editorial Apology

Va. paper expresses regret for backing segregation

A Virginia newspaper is expressing regret for supporting the state's fight to maintain separate schools for blacks and whites in the 1950s.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch says in Thursday's editorial that it played a central role in the "dreadful doctrine" of Massive Resistance _ a systematic campaign by Virginia's white political leaders to block school desegregation. The newspaper says that "the record fills us with regret."

The newspaper took the unusual step of promoting the editorial on its front page. It comes on the eve of a conference in Richmond marking the 50th anniversary of the end of Massive Resistance.

Published: July 16, 2009

Sometimes the era seems ancient; sometimes it resembles yesterday. Fifty years ago Virginia had a rendezvous with destiny and came up wanting. It scorned human rights and the promise of the Declaration of Independence and instead took a course known as Massive Resistance. Tomorrow at the Capitol, the University of Virginia's Center for Politics will convene a conference on the chapter and its legacy.

Throughout the episode, Richmond Newspapers played a central role -- but not a centering one. The hour was ignoble. Editorials in The News Leader relentlessly championed Massive Resistance and the dubious constitutional arguments justifying its unworthy cause. Although not so intimately engaged,.............Rest Found Here

Massive resistance was a policy declared by U.S. Senator Harry F. Byrd, Sr. on February 24, 1956 to unite other white politicians and leaders in Virginia in a campaign of new state laws and policies to prevent public school desegregation after the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision in 1954.[1] Although most of the laws created to implement Massive Resistance were negated by state and federal courts by January 1960, some policies and effects of the campaign against integrated public schools continued in Virginia for many more years........

Public Healthcare

Senator Bernie Sanders July 14, 2009

Where is the reasoning for Not having a National Health Care System that covers All?

As long as this country has argued, not debated, this important issue I've never understood that certain segments argument against, except that they are defending the drug companies, insurance companies, high end investors and others bottom lines of increased profits and dictation of what is covered. Which in the end has been hurting them, even though they are making more and more, because having huge numbers of the Nations Citizens not covered or under covered causes the work force to not be as productive, as they are expected to be, thus causing them to have a lower morale in their workplace if suffering from ailments that need, but can't be sought, care. It also can cause problems with those to young to work but approaching the workforce age. And much more can be added related to a so called capitalistic ideology.

In the end, but for a few reaping profits from their control of a system of need and rights, without a healthy society everything within suffers from the ailments outside of health, everything!

Lethal Warriors {UpDated}

Not a good report, but with the stress levels of multiple tours and possibly in two theaters, longer tours for much of the time our soldiers have been in both theaters, stress of conflict, family, experiences and much more, this does not surprise! Nor will it when it doesn't get the coverage it should among our talking heads and politicians, let alone a country that has pretty much forgotten both occupations.

Army: Soldiers in slayings faced intense combat

Soldiers from a Colorado unit accused in nearly a dozen slayings since returning home - including a couple gunned down as they put up a garage sale sign - could be showing hostility fueled by intense combat in Iraq, where the troops suffered heavy losses and told of witnessing war crimes, the military said Wednesday.

In what was billed as its most comprehensive study to date of violent crimes and combat exposure, the Army looked at soldiers from the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division - nicknamed the Lethal Warriors - who were accused in a spate of five killings around Colorado Springs, home to Fort Carson, in 2007 and 2008.

Six other slayings involving unit soldiers occurred in Colorado and other states since 2005

We've been hearing about a number of incidents, that is by 'we' those who use multiple mostly online sources and either accidentally find them or use the right search words. The MSM is virtually silent except when one or two who get it are brave enough to fight to get the reports aired!!

Army investigators compared the Fort Carson unit of about 3,700 soldiers with a similarly sized unit and found it suffered more combat deaths in Iraq and was deployed there longer.

"This deployment experienced higher levels of combat intensity," the report said, adding that the soldiers also faced "significant disruptions in family-social support."

Lt. Gen. Eric B. Schoomaker, the Army's surgeon general, said Wednesday the unit's crime cluster appeared to be unique among Army bases and that its combat exposure and length of deployments are just two factor officials are looking at.

"We're starting to look into the deployments and ... how it's related with attitudes and behavior," Schoomaker said.......Rest Here

Soldiers returning need not only more down time, between deployments, they should be serving one if any at all. They need time between deployments! They need the help they seek! They need to be understood when seeking that help!

The Military, and Veterans Administration, need the money, something always short of from this country as it finds nothing wrong with extremely bloated defense budgets, for the care of those who serve, not for outdated or not needed Military Procurements of Ordinance, Weapons or Systems to deliver same!!

And we Need to end both these conflicts soon, Real Soon!!!!

PTSD Ignored on Active Duty

Neglect, mistreatment and abuse are the norm for active-duty soldiers suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have thrown post-traumatic stress disorder into stark public light. As of the end of March, 346,393 US veterans were being treated for PTSD, and that number continues to grow rapidly.

However, PTSD symptoms don't always wait to emerge until soldiers return home. For active-duty soldiers like Airman Steven Flowers, stationed in Aviano, Italy, it can take years to receive even minimal care. And once treatment begins, the soldiers are often punished for revealing their problems........Rest Here

This shocking montage contrasts gushing footage from CNN about the life of luxury Bush has mapped out for himself, with the trail of bodies he leaves in his wake.

July 14, 1958 in Iraq-CIA-U.S.

A group of Iraqi army officers staged a coup in Iraq and overthrew the monarchy of King Faisal II (who had ascended to the throne at age four). The new government, led by Abdul Karim el Qasim, was ousted in 1963 by a coup helped by the CIA and led by the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party—later dominated by Saddam Hussein.

Saddam Hussein: whom we knew as a brutal street thug, connected to the right family, U.S. ideology of the time, and more importantly, for him, connected to the right people in the U.S. and CIA!

1958: Coup in Iraq sparks jitters in Middle East
A group of Iraqi army officers have staged a coup in Iraq and overthrown the monarchy.

Baghdad Radio announced the Army has liberated the Iraqi people from domination by a corrupt group put in power by "imperialism".

From now on Iraq would be a republic that would "maintain ties with other Arab countries". It said some 12,000 Iraqi troops based in neighboring Jordan have been ordered to return................

And how does a certain, important even then, Iraqi resource play into this coup:

While Iraqis are celebrating on the streets of Baghdad, the news is a cause for concern for western powers worried about their oil interests and instability in the region.

And in those days in the history of the World it was cold, as in cold war mentality.

Officials in Washington fear the Iraqi coup will mean the end of the Baghdad Pact whose members include Turkey, Persia and Pakistan. It was intended to stem the influence of the Soviet Union in the region.

There are fears the Iraq coup will have a domino effect and that the pro-Western oil regimes of Kuwait, Bahrain and the Trucial States may fall to Arab nationalists.

And the CIA, with one Saddam Hussein on the payroll, took it from there:

Iraq's coup leader and prime minister, Abdul Karim el Qasim, was ousted and killed in 1963 in a coup led by the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party.

And as they say, "The rest is History!", or some would now say, "The history that was is our present!".

The GI Bill:

The New Deal for Veterans (Pivotal Moments in American History)

Synopses
Publisher Comments:

On rare occasions in American history, Congress enacts a measure so astute, so far-reaching, so revolutionary, it enters the language as a metaphor. The Marshall Plan comes to mind, as does the Civil Rights Act. But perhaps none resonates in the American imagination like the G.I. Bill.

In a brilliant addition to Oxford's acclaimed Pivotal Moments in American History series, historians Glenn C. Altschuler and Stuart M. Blumin offer a compelling and often surprising account of the G.I. Bill and its sweeping and decisive impact on American life. Formally known as the Serviceman's Readjustment Act of 1944, it was far from an obvious, straightforward piece of legislation, but resulted from tense political maneuvering and complex negotiations. As Altschuler and Blumin show, an unlikely coalition emerged to shape and pass the bill, bringing together both New Deal Democrats and conservatives who had vehemently opposed Roosevelt's social-welfare agenda. For the first time in American history returning soldiers were not only supported, but enabled to pursue success--a revolution in America's policy towards its veterans.

Once enacted, the G.I. Bill had far-reaching consequences. By providing job training, unemployment compensation, housing loans, and tuition assistance, it allowed millions of Americans to fulfill long-held dreams of social mobility, reshaping the national landscape. The huge influx of veterans and federal money transformed the modern university and the surge in single home ownership vastly expanded America's suburbs. Perhaps most important, as Peter Drucker noted, the G.I. Bill "signaled the shift to the knowledge society." The authors highlight unusual or unexpected features of the law--its color blindness, the frankly sexist thinking behind it, and its consequent influence on race and gender relations. Not least important, Altschuler and Blumin illuminate its role in individual lives whose stories they weave into this thoughtful account.

Written with insight and narrative verve by two leading historians, The G.I. Bill makes a major contribution to the scholarship of postwar America.

White Supremacy in the Military {UpDated}

I, (name), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.

Previous Report: Watchdog group says dozens of active-duty troops found on neo-Nazi site

It is Facebook for the fascist set, and the typical online profiles of its members reveal expected tastes.

Favorite book: “Mein Kampf.”

Favorite movie: the Nazi propaganda film “Triumph of the Will.”

Interests: “white women.”

Dislikes: “anyone who opposes the master race.”

Where in the Military Oath of Enlistment above does it say anything related to the quote from the previous article taken from a Neo-Nazi website! Nazi's, and Hitler's leadership especially, once and still considered one of the Worlds Extreme Enemies now relegated to Hero Worship, as are those who parrot his beliefs, by those who arrogantly, in their own fears, seek to destroy others as they espouse Hitlers and Nazi Ideology of a superior race of the human being. Even throwing in what they consider christian religious ideology, if military they say it in the oath So help me God, just like the extremist, i.e. al Qaeda and Taliban, of other religious ideologies, just two of the groups they hate. And of course they hate everyone who differ with their extremism, everyone is their enemy.

SPLC: Southern Poverty Law Center's recent report on military {supposedly} personal, registered as, on Neo-Nazi and White Supermists websites and posting their thoughts on others, which means most of those they serve with or have served with, soldiers watching their backs, protecting them as they hope these same soldiers would seek to protect them.

I, [name], do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.

Again, see anything that points towards an extremist ideology of hating all others not affiliated with your beliefs or of your skin color in the above Military Officers Oath of Service, officers that lead many assigned under their command, watching over all, who's main responsibility is the safety of all of the military brothers and sisters.

Or how about the closer to home States National Guard, many no longer just weekend warriors, now hardened by combat duties and duties in theaters of occupations, and not just for one tour but many, and not just one theater now but two.

I, [name], do solemly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State (Commonwealth, District, Territory) of ___ against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the Governor of the State (Commonwealth, District, Territory) of ___, that I make this obligation freely, without any mental reservations or purpose of evasion, and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the Office of [grade] in the Army/Air National Guard of the State (Commonwealth, District, Territory) of ___ upon which I am about to enter, so help me God.

White supremacist leader says half of his group has served in the military

The leader of the white supremacist National Socialist Movement estimated Friday that half of his group’s membership has at one time served in the military.

A day earlier, the Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate groups, identified 40 profiles of individuals claiming to be active members of the military on newsaxon.org, a social networking Web site run by the NSM. A review of the site by Stars and Stripes found at least 130 profiles of members who claim to be in the military, though none of their identities and military affiliations has been confirmed.

I'm sure there are a few who were either members of these groups prior to joining or joined after but while serving or after discharge, but does this leader?, Jeff Schoep, check the papers of these military? or veterans? to see just who has served. Or is this like many small radical groups, founded on so called patriotism, nationalism and flag waving, and affiliated to their radical extreme political views, that if someone says they are, wears patches and shows ribbons and medals, and tells tales, they are! Or are they like many, little 'kombat keyboard chickenhawks' who wouldn't think of serving their country but just really enjoy posting up their fears and hatreds in mocho rambo style, in this day, on radical extremist websites and anyplace they think they can stay hidden behind patriotic user names, much like they're breathern we now label as 'Terrorist', who like themselves carry out Criminal Terror against others they hate or just to make their point of being superior in ideology!

How about you Jeff Schoep, have you served, if so did you keep your mouth shut when taking the oath with your brothers and sisters, of all colors, creeds, religious ideologies, most you say you hate, or are you a 'kombat keyboarder' wearing desert cammies and playing rambo?

“I think it’s an extreme left-wing scare tactic, and I think white soldiers have the same right to be in the military as everyone else does,” said Jeff Schoep, leader of the National Socialist Movement. “I think the SPLC is trying to pressure the military to throw these people out, and there is no basis for it. I think its un-American. I think it’s seditious.”

"I think white soldiers have the same right to be in the military as everyone else does". You're right Schoep, and all that think? like you, they do, and they make up the majority of our military, enlisted to officers. But why would someone who thinks? like you want to join one of the most Inclusive Groups in our society, the Total Opposite of your Ideologies of Nazi Supremacy and White Rule, the Master Race!

The military is made up of every color of our Human American Rainbow, every religious ideology found on these shores, every personal lifestyle as well, they train together, live together, eat together, work together, fight together, serve together and Most Importantly Protect Each Other In Combat Theaters when sent into War and Occupations, whether Wars of Choice or of Real Need, in Defense of our Country and Constitution, that's not only their Oath that's their Beliefs, Heartfelt, for their Country, their Whole Country and All Within!

If your members, who say they're military, are serving and carrying on their hate filled beliefs, beliefs they may even post up to show others on your websites, what they do in theaters of operations Endangers not only themselves but Every Soldier they're serving with as well as the Retaliations on other Soldiers, and civilians of their country, from their Atrocities Committed!

And when do you call on these ex-military to rise up and carry out acts of Criminal Terrorism against their own Country men and women, some being soldiers they served with or just veterans of, like themselves, to reach your Stated Goals of this "Master Race!"?????

Ray A. Letteer, head of Marine Corps cybersecurity, said the service blocks sites, such as newsaxon.org, that adversely affect good order and discipline.

“It’s one of the standards we take a look at” when blocking for content, he said.

Over the past year more of those types of sites have been blocked by Marine Corps, Letter said.

The Marine Corps manages its network centrally and can flag new sites that have inappropriate content. Anyone caught using them can be turned into their command for discipline, he said.

I suggest all of you need to take a trip to DC, not for violence, like one just did, nor to mass against our government seeking your master race, but to stand in front of Our Memorial, 'The Wall, or any of the Memorials to those who've served our Country and Constitution in our Conflicts, right or wrong. I suggest at "The Wall" you read Every Name, these are the names of our fallen brothers, whites who wouldn't follow nor serve with the likes of you, blacks and brown skin who served Honorably and were killed in combat, any other color of the human rainbow you can see around you and your community, immigrants many not even being citizens of the country they served yet, gays {they didn't tell even back then}, religious ideology, you name it {knowing it's really tough for the likes of you to think} and you'll find those that serve, The Total Opposite Of Your Hate, Racism and Rhetoric!!
