Bogus 'Occupy Wall Street' Sites?! WARNING!!!!!
Caught this from NPR:
As the Occupy Wall Street movement inspires protests in more U.S. cities, a website has popped up that seems to be trading on the group's somewhat nebulous status and lack of formal organization. The site, called OccupyParty.org, has been disavowed on the actual Occupy Wall Street site, where the author also noted, "We are not a political institution."
OccupyParty has a landing page that features what you might expect from a young political movement: images of a diverse crowd of smiling people, waving flags; an image of the U.S. Constitution; and a video purporting to show dastardly Wall Street bankers. read more>>>

The Afghans: 10 Years On
In this Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011 photo, an Afghan National Army soldier relaxes on his bed inside the sleeping quarters of their barracks in Kunduz, northen Afghanistan. As the U.S. and NATO mark 10 years of war in Afghanistan, a grim picture emerges from scores of interviews over six months across the country with ordinary Afghans, government officials, soldiers, and former and current Taliban. (AP Photo/Anja Niedringhaus)
Asif Khan sits on a dirty, once-white blanket in an abandoned cinema and fights back tears of desperation.
He can't find a job for his eldest son, who "even knows computers," without paying a bribe. He can't afford uniforms, books or pencils for his nine daughters to go to school. And so they all live with him in the old cinema, where mangled rebars dangle like tentacles from the ceiling and a cold wind whips through windows with no glass.
It's a long way from the optimism Khan felt when he returned to Afghanistan from Pakistan after the U.S. defeated the Taliban in 2001. Now, he says, "I have no hope."
As the U.S. and NATO mark 10 years of war in Afghanistan, a grim picture emerges from scores of interviews over six months across the country with ordinary Afghans, government officials, soldiers, and former and current Taliban, along with recent data. The difference between the often optimistic assessment of U.S. generals and the reality on the ground for Afghans is stark.
There are signs of progress — an important one is that schools are open. More than 6 million children are in school today, according to the United Nations. During the Taliban, girls were denied schooling, and before that most schools were closed because of fighting. The media is also flourishing, with several newspapers, weekly magazines and 10 television channels in operation. read more>>>
Pew Report: Veterans of the Post-9/11 Military
Pew report examines attitudes on conflicts, terrorism and burdens and rewards of military

5 October 2011 - One in three U.S. veterans of the post-9/11 military believes the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were not worth fighting, and a majority think that after 10 years of combat America should be focusing less on foreign affairs and more on its own problems, according to an opinion survey released Wednesday.
The findings highlight a dilemma for the Obama administration and Congress as they struggle to shrink the government's huge budget deficits and reconsider defense priorities while trying to keep public support for remaining involved in Iraq and Afghanistan for the longer term.
Nearly 4,500 U.S. troops have died in Iraq and about 1,700 in Afghanistan. Combined war costs since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks have topped $1 trillion.
About half (51 percent) of post-9/11 veterans say that the use of military force to fight terrorism creates hatred that breeds more terrorism; 40 percent say it is the best way to defeat terrorism. These views are nearly identical to those of the general public.
The survey also reflected what many view as a troublesome cultural gap between the military and the general public. Although numerous polls have shown that Americans hold the military in high regard, the respondents in the Pew research acknowledged a lack of understanding of what military life entails.
Only 27 percent of adult civilians said the public understands the problems facing those in uniform, and the share of veterans who said so was even lower — 21 percent. read more>>>

Agent Orange: Chemical Warfare and Results Of
Oct 03, 2011 - We've all heard about Agent Orange. Some of us have even seen the pictures of what it's done. But most of us have very little understanding of how it came to be used in Vietnam and how it is still hurting people and the environment to this day.
Fred Wilcox has spent decades researching the history and impact of Agent Orange on American veterans and Vietnamese people and their land. He is an Associate Professor of Creative Writing at Ithaca College and his new book is called "Scorched Earth: Legacies of Chemical Warfare in Vietnam". He spoke with New America Now Host Shirin Sadeghi.

Lawless KBR Wanted Shower Deaths to Apply Iraqi Law
Oct 04, 2011 - Iraqi law should not govern a lawsuit brought by the mother of a Pittsburgh-area soldier electrocuted in a barracks shower at an Army base in Iraq, a federal judge has ruled.
Lawyers for Houston-based military contractor KBR Inc. had asked U.S. District Judge Nora Barry Fischer to apply Iraqi law to the ongoing lawsuit in the January 2008 death of Pittsburgh-area Staff Sgt. Ryan Maseth. But Fischer agreed with lawyers for the soldier's parents who argued that United States law should hold sway because the base was under American control - and could provide for punitive damages and other advantages to the plaintiffs not recognized by Iraqi law.
Fischer's decision was the second time she ruled in favor of the plaintiffs. The 24-page opinion handed down Sept. 23 was in response to KBR lawyers who asked her to reconsider a June decision that U.S. law should apply. read more>>>

Children of Agent Orange
28 Sep 2011 - Fifty years ago this month, in the early stages of the Vietnam War, the US military began spraying rural areas of the country with the herbicide, Agent Orange. The programme's goal was to defoliate forested land, depriving the enemy Viet Cong of cover and driving peasants to the cities, thus destroying the Viet Cong's support base and food supply.
Over the next 10 years more than 80 million litres were deployed across 7.4 million hectares of Vietnam, eastern Laos and parts of Cambodia. They were an effective defoliant, but there is strong evidence that the deadly dioxins contained in Agent Orange also had a catastrophic effect on the health of millions of Vietnamese – killing hundreds of thousands and causing dreadful diseases and birth defects in subsequent generations right up to this day. read more>>>

Coming on the heels of the Occupy Wall street event in NYC it is our deep hope that hundreds if not thousands of VFP members will turn out to experience and participate directly in what democracy looks like and make a strong showing for this historically important event.
As the Occupy Wall Street Spreads to other cities Washington DC will not be left out. Those in and around can join Veterans for Peace, and others, at the Occupation of Freedom park in DC on October 6th.
Wish I could join the Brothers and Sisters in traveling and staying there but alas the collapse has me in early retirement, never wanted to and still much able to work especially in the multi trades I performed in the construction industry, some over forty years of experience in, as my tools lie collecting dust. But will be there in strong spirit.
October 2011 is the 10th anniversary of the invasion of Afghanistan and the beginning of the 2012 federal austerity budget. It is time to light the spark that sets off a true democratic, nonviolent transition to a world in which people are freed to create just and sustainable solutions. Read more.
September 30, 2011 - Brothers and Sisters,
It is not an exaggeration that in a few short days, one of the most potentially significant events regarding our future on this planet will begin. That event is of course, Stop the Machine! Create a New World! beginning October 6th in Freedom Plaza. This is more than an event, it is a wave of stand up, take space, human resistance to corporate state greed and violence - a wave that is sweeping the world and has now come to the U.S. read more>>>

"We still have a choice today: nonviolent coexistence, or violent co-annihilation. We must move past indecision to action. If we do not act, we shall surely be dragged down the long, dark, and shameful corridors of time reserved for those who possess power without compassion, might without morality, and strength without sight." --Martin Luther King Jr. delivered 4 April 1967, Riverside Church, New York City
On the heels of this non-violent action, joining others around the Country especially those on Wall Street, the following month brings this:
"We want to help end the epidemic of disconnection between civilian and military families,"
September 29, 2011 - The largely silent voices of military families after 10 years of war will be heard loud and clear this fall in Washington, D.C., thanks to the efforts of a Medford woman.
Stacy Bannerman is the producer and director of "Homefront 911: Military Family Monologues," which will be performed beginning at noon Nov. 17 in the United States Capitol Visitors Center Congressional Auditorium.
She is the author of many of the monologues that will be read by military family members.
"We want to help end the epidemic of disconnection between civilian and military families," said Bannerman, founder of The Sanctuary for Veterans & Families, a nonprofit organization that provides advocacy, support and sanctuary weekends for women veterans, wives of veterans and their loved ones.
"We want to raise the awareness of the impact a decade of war has had on these military families," she said. "We've heard a lot about the stress and strain muliple deployments have on troops, but people need to realize the stress on families is at a rate approaching those of our service members." read more>>>
