Bronx - depleted uranium forum Mon 6/12
PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Release:
May 21, 2006
The Coalition to Ban Depleted Uranium (CBDU){This is the International Coalition to Ban Depleted Uranium Site}, a Bronx -
Westchester based advocacy group, will present a forum at
the Riverdale-Yonkers Society for Ethical Culture on
Monday, June 12 from 7 to 9 PM. The forum, entitled
"Depleted Uranium: Destroying Veterans Lives/Polluting
the Global Environment", is designed to raise awareness
of a critical issue affecting the health and lives of
veterans of the first Gulf War, the Balkans, Afghanistan,
as well as troops currently serving in or just returning
from Iraq, and how this material will pose a continuing
environmental and health hazard for centuries to come.
The forum will also serve to help CBDU forge alliances
with groups, such as the International Coalition to Ban
Uranium Weapons (ICBUW), whose purpose is to stop the
manufacture, sale and use of DU weapons worldwide.
Depleted Uranium (DU) is the residue resulting from the
enrichment of Uranium for use in nuclear weapons and
power plants. It is both radioactive and a toxic metal.
In a recent study, it was shown that DU binds with DNA
which can result in mutations that can cause severe birth
defects. Tens of thousands of soldiers have been exposed
to DU's damaging effects since the first Gulf War. The
military, VA and U.S. government will not admit that DU
poses a problem.
Participating in the forum will be Frida Berrigan, writer
and Senior Research Associate at the Arms Trade Resource
Center of the World Policy Institute in New York, and
daughter of famed activists Elizabeth McAlister and the
late Philip Berrigan; Rev. Lucius Walker, Executive
Director of the Interreligious Foundation for Community
Organization (IFCO) and founder of Pastors for Peace, who
recently visited Iraq; and retired SSgt. Raymond Ramos of
the New York National Guard, who has tested positive for
DU exposure as a result of his tour of duty in Iraq, and
is one of 12 soldiers currently suing the U.S. government
to have their conditions acknowledged and treated.
The Society for Ethical Culture is located at 4450
Fieldston Road Bronx, NY, 10471. For more information,

Coalition to Ban Depleted Uranium - No More DU
Our mission is to:
**Present the latest facts and figures on the use of DU munitions and products by the U.S. and other governments
**Describe and monitor DU's effect on troops, veterans, and civilian populations in not only the countries where it was used but also countries to where the particles have traveled
**Advocate for the testing and treatment of returning troops for DU poisoning
**Act as a clearinghouse for information on the rights and resources available to DU victims
**Network with other DU groups and human rights organizations worldwide to work toward the eventual ban of DU weapons and products
Anyone in or around the New York City area, or if you have connections there, may want to attend the above forum on DU. For further information and connections to many working on getting this the Public Mindset it should have!!
