A veterans charity run by controversial "nonprofit entrepreneur" Roger Chapin and currently under regulatory investigation has quietly filed an amended federal tax return acknowledging for the first time its own doubts that a deal comprising half its entire charitable effort ever took place.
The new filing for 2006 by the Coalition to Salute America's Heroes Foundation of Ossining, N.Y., sought to cure a number of flaws pointed out by Forbes and the Better Business Bureau (BBB) Wise Giving Alliance, a leading charity watchdog. Among other matters, the revised return for the first time listed the board membership and full compensation that year of Chapin associate Michael V. Meyer and disclosed his ownership of a consultancy that was paid to handle the now-questioned deal.
