Inmates train pups for Veterans & Disabled

Support our troops, help people with disabilities, and save dogs.

SNIP:

I was driving to work the other day and had the radio tuned to my favorite public station WAMC Northeast Public Radio and heard a Roundtable program about inmates training pups and shelter dogs for disabled vets and other people with disabilities.

The Program is run by NEADS. You can listen to it here:

A statement at the end of the program hit me hard:

"It can cost up to $20,000 to buy and train a dog. President Bush in 2001 signed a law authorizing the Veterans Administration to pay for programs such as Canines for Combat Veterans, but the VA continues to "study the reliability of service dogs" and has not provided any funding. NEADS pays for the program from private sources."

Angered by that report, I decided to find out more. As more and more wounded vets come home, these are the kinds of programs that are needed to support our vets.
