NIMBY: UpDate on VA Care Facility

Remember this from a few days back.

“Everybody’s concern is we’ll have one-legged veterans like in that Tom Cruise movie wheeling their wheel chairs up and down the street swigging out of a bottle,” McCartney said. “Whether there is any truth to that or not, that’s their concern.”

New VA program divides Oakland park civic groups, veterans

Well guess what, and only a few days prior to the tenth anniversary of 11 Sept 2001!

Oakland Park votes down VA facility

City leaders Wednesday called the proposed veterans’ treatment program ‘incompatible’ with its plan for a family-friendly downtown.

7 September 2011 - The night began patriotically — with the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks only days away, the Oakland Park City Commission honored its fire and police officers.

The night ended divisively — with Oakland Park city leaders rejecting a proposed Veterans Administration treatment program as incompatible with the city’s plan for a retail-focused, family-friendly downtown.

“I fully support our first responders, our soldiers, our veterans,” said City Commissioner John Adornato, one of those to vote against the veteran’s center. But, he added, “this is not the place given our long-term vision for bringing retail down to our Main Street.”

Oakland Park’s Main Street downtown area runs north from Oakland Park Boulevard near the intersection with Dixie Highway. The city has invested millions of dollars in transforming its downtown into a pedestrian-friendly, visually-appealing thoroughfare, with new streetscapes and landscaping among the many improvements.

However, more than half of the buildings on Main Street are vacant despite the city’s development effort, pointed out Bonnie Miskek, an attorney representing WSSA LLC, the developer behind the project. read more>>>

No Revenues = Still No Sacrifice = That's Called 'Support' For The Troops = DeJa-Vu all over again, Shared Sacrifice My A**!!
No Sacrifice now a decade plus long added to the previous decades!!

Most certainly 'patriotically' with all the symbols of and as 9/11 approached giving honor to those in the community who actually serve it.

And the words for those that are serving:

“I fully support our first responders"
These hollow words of 'support' come as communities, states and some in the federal government are going after these type of community job workers, trying to strip them of pay, benefits, the long hard fought for workers rights, like collective bargaining, safety, their own as they perform their jobs, jobs they love and only ask for respect for what they do and a comfortable fair living for their families.

That 'support', they speak of, is exactly the same hollow 'support' done in cheap symbols and words this past decade:

"our soldiers, our veterans"
As the recently departed Secretary of Defense stated as he was departing: "And so what I've been trying to do and what Mrs. Biden and Mrs. Obama and the chairman and his wife - all these folks, are trying to do is to - is to try and get that other 99 percent to - they all say they support the troops, but it's not just enough to say it." - Defense Secretary Robert Gates - 23 June 2011 - PBS News Hour, words ignored as has been what this administration has been doing for Veterans, or trying to do, by the oh so patriotic americans as they argue about their 'patriotism' and parrot the words of their favorite talking heads.

As those who serve this Country and it's Constitution are sent over and over into not one conflict this time but two wars of choice, while here they scream about who is more 'patriotic' bringing the need for more cheap symbols and empty words, still no Shared Sacrifice by the country and no demand for nor rage as the Congressional House has already sought cuts in the Veterans Administration budget, under funded for decades now.

"proposed Veterans Administration treatment program as incompatible with the city’s plan for a retail-focused, family-friendly downtown."
The message to these soldiers returning from the multiple tours in two theaters, and joining our ranks of Military Veterans, DeJa-Vu all over again, same as the decades since Vietnam and even Korea adding in the First Gulf War and those especially suffering from Gulf War Syndrome or maimed in others ways: We don't want you nor your families in our 'family friendly' commercial development, especially if you've lost a leg or two, or and arm or two, or suffer from the trauma of the wars we sent you into as we wave the flag and yell "we're number one!" "we're number one!", we don't want our kids not only viewing you but kept from even thinking that they might want to one day serve this country, we're above you in status and 'patriotism' for the 'homeland'!!
