Navy shows off ‘great green fleet’

The Navy’s Great Green Fleet is completing its successful test run off of the coast of Hawaii this week, and Operation Free veterans from across the country are making sure people know about it.

Yesterday in Sacramento, Operation Free veterans, led by our California Veteran Field Organizers, and Dylan Ratigan, former host of MSNBC's The Dylan Ratigan Show, participated in a clean energy press event on the steps of the state capitol in support of the Navy's investments in advanced biofuels.

'Green hornet' and ships perform on biofuel, in face of controversy
July 18, 2012 - The secretary of the Navy got into a MH-60 helicopter Wednesday whose rotor blades were running on a mix of animal fat and algae, in addition to old-fashioned fossil fuel.

The helicopter lifted off the aircraft carrier Nimitz and chugged away toward the destroyer Chafee, which was sailing in the distance, also on biofuel.

Ships and aircraft off Hawaii demonstrated Navy Secretary Ray Mabus’ green fleet concept Wednesday, bringing to reality a retreat from petroleum that started in 2009 but recently became controversial.
